De Dion-Bouton is obviously no longer a household name in the motoring world. But it remains one of the most important car manufacturers in history. A pioneer of the V8 engine and rack-and-pinion steering - not to mention all manner of steam-powered vehicles, tricycles, bicycles and railcars - the company is as significant to motoring as brands like Ford and Mercedes-Benz.
This remarkable Landaulette limousine is a particularly iconic piece of that history. The Dion factories, based in Puteaux, were renowned for their excellent engine construction, and after the Armistice in 1918, the company began building combustion engines to a new specification.
By 1927, the Type IW was the best-selling model - with a larger engine and a variety of body styles. It was still the era of the Landaulette, still preferred by the elite. Legend has it that the Marquis de Dion was practically inseparable from his Type IW - often making daily trips down the Champs-Élysées.
This example has been owned by the same family since 1950, adding a layer of personal history and continuity to its appeal. It was refurbished in 1981, with the interior trim and soft top redone, and the engine, gearbox and accessories completely overhauled. This car has since acquired a level of patina that gives it a certain distinction. This car is in good overall condition and in good working order, making it a fantastic opportunity for a collector or enthusiast.
