A plus

While today you'd be forgiven for never having heard of'Motosacoche', it was once Switzerland's largest motorbike manufacturer and was renowned for supplying engines to the likes of Royal Enfield, Brough Superior, Ariel, Matchless and even Triumph at various times between the wars. The Helvetian manufacturer also built its own motorbikes, and here we find one of the best original survivors of the Motosacoche 409 that you're likely to find.

Resplendent in its beautifully weathered original paintwork, this bike is fitted with period accessories and is offered in good running and riding condition. Although there is room for improvement in its reliability and handling, this bike is an excellent opportunity for collectors or those looking for a small-scale motorbike project. With French registration and a valid normal vehicle registration document, this remarkable motorbike is ready to be handed over to a new owner.

History and documentation

  • Normal registration
  • Offered without MOT
  • We believe this is a 1930 model, registered since 1945
  • Complete with very old French number plates
  • The seller acquired the bike in 2010 without any documentation or maintenance history.

Condition of the bike

  • Original paintwork and decals
  • Fabulous patina accumulated with age
  • No noticeable dents on frame, tank, mudguards or toolboxes
  • No signs of major corrosion
  • Wheels and tyres in very good condition.
  • French-style yellow tinted headlight
  • Both seats are in good condition, with patina but no significant damage
  • Vintage OS clock to match speedometer/odometer set.

  • 500 cm3 single-cylinder engine
  • Three-speed gearbox
  • Vintage air filter retained
  • We are told that the bike runs and drives well, although there are a few minor problems
  • The magneto heats up after about twenty kilometres.
  • The brake linings need changing.
  • We understand that there is an intermittent problem with the kickstarter.
