The Appeal

The Packard Super Eight is an imposing automobile, with its spacious interior providing opulent accommodation for passengers and the long bonnet concealing a powerful straight-eight engine. This truly is a luxury automobile of its day, aimed at the well-heeled motorists of 1940s America.
Presented in exceptionally good condition throughout, this car has been repainted, retrimmed and re-chromed. As such, it is the kind of car you would be proud to be seen in.
Coupled with its fantastically good looks, the powerful engine pulls this Packard along at a very comfortable pace, making it a practical car for modern roads, which befits its stylish image.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in 1949
  • Imported to Italy from France on 17th November 2009
  • The ‘Revisione’ test has lapsed by a couple of months, but the vendor states that it should pass another easily
  • Professionally restored between 2015 and 2017
  • Copies of repair manuals included

The Interior

  • Spacious interior with bench seating
  • Luxuriously appointed
  • Upholstery in excellent condition
Opening the door to this Packard reveals a sumptuously appointed interior with well-sprung bench seating for six passengers. The steering column mounted gear shifter helps the cabin feel spacious and the generously proportioned steering wheel gives the driver a sense of purpose.
The dashboard is beautifully finished in burr veneer and the chrome fittings add a touch of ‘40s flair. The upholstery and door cards are in excellent condition throughout, having been retrimmed in recent years. New carpets have been fitted in place of the original rubber matting, which give it a more refined feel.
Above, the headlining is clean and secure, and to the rear the boot is spacious, well carpeted and clean. There is a spare wheel stored in the boot as well as a jack and tools.

The Exterior

  • Fully repainted in recent years
  • Chrome fittings re-plated
  • Underside in ‘excellent’ condition
Finished in a fetching shade of Bordeaux Red with a white roof, this Packard looks very smart throughout. The car has reportedly been repainted recently, so the finish remains excellent, with no significant damage to speak of.
The body has received some work to the front wings and it all looks to be in good shape, with nice lines. Underneath, the car is said to be in excellent condition, with no reported damage or corrosion.
The external chromework has been re-plated, so is in excellent shape, and the hubcaps and taillamp plinths have been painted silver rather than plated. The wheels are in great condition, and the whitewall tyres are said to be similarly good.

The Mechanics

  • Brakes overhauled recently
  • New 6V battery fitted
  • Straight-eight engine said to run very well
With its flathead straight-eight engine, this Packard is a powerful car capable of cruising in comfort without strain. Lifting the side-hinged bonnet reveals a very clean and tidy engine bay, and that long eight-cylinder power plant at its heart.
The engine is said to run very well and sound great, with no unusual noises. Like any engine of this period, it does leak a little oil, but not a concerning amount.
Recently, a new six-volt battery has been fitted, which should make starting the car a trouble-free process. And the braking system has also reportedly been overhauled, which will give the next owner peace of mind.
Packards of this era have a quality feel to them, as such the engine was not deemed to require work during the car’s restoration in 2015-17. But the vendor tells us that it has recently had its carburettor cleaned and its oil changed.

Summary

As you can see, this Super Eight is in exceptionally good condition throughout. It is finished to a high standard inside and out, and wouldn’t look out of place arriving at the smartest of venues.
This Packard would make an excellent addition to any collection, and stands ready to be used, enjoyed and admired.
