1950 Buick Super (Dynaflow)

  • Original preserved
  • ASI registered with Gold Plate
  • A majestic full-size American full of charm and chrome, with bodywork and mechanics in need of revision

After World War II, Buick resumed civilian production with slightly updated versions of its pre-war models, the Series 40 Special, the Series 50 Super that combined the Series 40 powertrain with Series 70 bodies, and the Series 70, which included the most prestigious, powerful and expensive vehicles.
In 1949, Buick presented the first truly new models, built on newly designed platforms and packed with technological and styling innovations.
Once again, the Super combined the majestic bodywork of the 70 Series with the mechanicals of the 40 Series, featuring a four-litre, in-line eight-cylinder engine with 'Fireball Dynaflash Eight' overhead valves, four-wheel drum brakes and independent front suspension.
In 1950, the Super was given a largely new body, with a new front end with full windscreen, even more prominent grille and rounder lines, and adopted a 4.3-litre Fireball engine with 120 hp.

The Super was fitted with a three-speed manual gearbox, but could be equipped with the new, state-of-the-art Dynaflow two-speed automatic transmission with torque converter, standard on the 70 Series.
Available as a saloon, two-door sedanette, cabriolet and station wagon, the Super was recognisable by its imposing, curvaceous bodywork, richly decorated with abundant chrome, a huge side-opening bonnet and intricately designed sculpted flanks, on which appeared the famous 'Ventiports', the unmistakable decorative portholes - three on this intermediate version and four on the Roadmaster - that have since become a Buick hallmark.

The cabin was equally impressive, spacious, richly chromed and well finished, with comfortable sofas that could seat up to six passengers.

ASI-registered with Targa Oro, this 1950 Buick Super has had a single owner for the past thirty years.
Always kept in the garage and used for ceremonies, events, rallies and rides, it has received some conservative restoration work over the years, including restoration of the bonnet, front wings and bumper chrome, the imposing front grille and rear headlight surrounds.
The bodywork shows the signs of time in some areas, with traces of rust and paintwork in need of revision.

We are told that the engine is in good running condition and the electrical system has been converted to 12 volts.
Deserving of a thorough restoration that would reinvigorate the mechanics and restore the splendid bodywork, this Buick, now rare even in the United States, represents a truly important opportunity for an American car enthusiast who wants to crown the dream of driving a model of great historical importance and timeless appeal.

  • ASI registered with gold plate
  • Overhaul valid until 2024
  • Only one owner in the last 30 years

In 2020 the jeweller Nicola Bulgari showed interest in buying this Buick.

  • In fair general condition
  • Seats and door panels upholstered in green and white leatherette
  • Well preserved dashboard
  • Original radio
  • Headlining replaced
The extremely spacious interior of this Buick is striking, with a rather restrained and linear dashboard in fair condition consisting of a large shelf at the top and body-coloured panels at the bottom, which houses a beautiful analogue clock.
The ambience is dominated by the gleaming chrome centre console that houses the original radio and its loudspeaker, ventilation controls and accessory services.
Behind the handsome three-spoke steering wheel with chrome horn ring is a large circular speedometer with an extremely striking appearance.
The chrome plating appears to be in good condition overall, with some slightly oxidised details.
The seats have been reupholstered in green and white vinyl to match the bodywork and are in fair condition, while the door panels show a few loose spots.
The headlining has been replaced and is in good condition.
The interior of the luggage compartment has been restored and is undamaged and clean.
The floor is covered with a rather worn carpet.
The door sills are protected by chrome door sills in poor condition below which oxidation is visible and all door seals are rather deteriorated.

  • Restored front wings and bonnet
  • Bumpers, grille and rear headlight surrounds rechromed
  • Two-tone paintwork
  • Numerous paintwork imperfections
  • Traces of rust
  • Underbody with widespread oxidation
Imposing and flamboyant, the bodywork of this Buick shows no major visible damage and is characterised by complex and harmonious shapes, rich in impressive styling details.
The sculpted flanks are punctuated by a wide rib joining the mudguards and a chrome moulding. The three chrome portholes on either side of the bonnet make this car instantly recognisable as a Buick.

The majestic front end is certainly the most striking part, with the large chrome grille, the crosshair emblem on the bonnet and the large round headlights.

At the rear, there are fascinating details such as the three-part rear window, the small headlights with chrome frames, the massive, shiny bumper and the large, rather deteriorated Buick Dynaflow emblem on the boot.
The two-tone paintwork has many scratches, cracks and imperfections.
Many of the bright styling details are stainless steel and some of the more important chrome parts, such as the bumpers, large grille and rear headlight surrounds have been re-chromed.
The front wings and bonnet have been restored, while the rest of the bodywork needs attention.
The underbody has numerous areas of oxidation.

  • In-line eight-cylinder 4.309 cm³ engine with 120 hp
  • Dynaflow two-speed automatic transmission
  • Newly overhauled engine
  • 12-volt electrical system
Opening the large, side-hinged bonnet, the engine compartment appears in need of attention.
The long in-line eight-cylinder engine and other components bear the signs of time, with many scratches, dents and oxidation.
The seller points out that the engine was recently overhauled and does not require the use of additives, and assures that this Buick starts correctly and drives without any particular problems.
The electrical system has been converted to 12 volts.

Flamboyant and extremely generously proportioned, the Buick Super is a perfect example of the American full-size sedan of the early 1950s, rich in precious details and advanced technological solutions, and offering a level of performance and comfort that was unthinkable for most other cars of the time.
This very honestly presented Buick Super remained for thirty years with its last owner who always kept it in mechanically efficient condition, servicing it regularly and overhauling it.
Over the years, the bodywork has received some attention and many chrome parts, very important components for these cars whose restoration is often a long and complex operation, have been re-chromed and are in good condition.

Rare and fascinating, this car will certainly benefit from a thorough restoration that can restore the majestic bodywork to its original splendour and bring the mechanics back to perfect working order.
Once the damage of time has been remedied and the most problematic aspects corrected, its next owner will be able to enjoy a magnificent-looking car, destined to be the centre of attention on the road and at any rally or exhibition, highly suitable for events and ceremonies and capable of providing great thrills.
