The Attractions

The Austin-Healey 100 represented Austin's triumphant entry into the world of fast and fun roadsters - an irresistible combination of high performance, striking design and exceptional handling was the perfect recipe to take on rivals like Jaguar and Triumph - making a grand entrance.

The BN1 was the first series of this dynamic small sports car. Proving capable of a top speed of 106mph during early test drives, it became a huge commercial success, becoming a model for Healey sports cars in the following decade.

Restored in the 1990s and now at home in sunny Italian climes, this 'Big Healey' is in exceptional condition and is accompanied by certification of the correct serial numbers, matching the factory records. This car has clearly been treated with the utmost care and no doubt will be so by its lucky new owner.

Fully restored, the bodywork of this red Healey 100 is a perfect ambassador for this car. The compact, smooth, flowing lines, distinctive grille and rounded wheel arches provide an outstanding example of a mid-century British car.

This example has been restored in the past, but one could easily assume that it has received attention much more recently. It has clearly been pampered after restoration, every panel is in good condition, well aligned and well maintained. We see no signs of corrosion or paint defects, and there are only very slight signs of scratches.

The chrome has a slight patina, but still stands out beautifully, and the windows and headlights all appear to be in good condition, with no nicks or damage. The characteristic period branding is still all present and nicely enhances the car's appearance.

The car is fitted with a soft top in the correct colour, in very good condition and without any rips, tears or holes. It is also equipped with a set of period-accurate spoked wheels, on which a complete set of Hankook tyres is mounted.

Underneath, the car is in excellent condition for its age, with very light signs of surface wear and no major corrosion - ideal conditions for a mid-century British car.

Light but elegant, the Big Healeys may suffer from a lack of modern conveniences - but they do hark back to the philosophy of classic roadsters, born to listen to the sound of the engine on country roads. The result is a simple but elegant uncovered cabin with sports seats, a compact dashboard and an attractive wooden Moto-Lita steering wheel.

This example was expertly restored some 30 years ago and has acquired a pleasant patina over the years. The result is an extremely correct car for its age, with no rips or tears in the upholstery and clear, legible instrumentation.

We can see a few bubbles in the door panels, some scratches on the chrome and panels, and slight wear on the bakelite switches and controls - however, all of this adds to the car's natural vintage charm.

The carpets are in good condition and the boot looks in excellent condition with a well-presented spare wheel inside.

Mechanics

  • Vehicle with correct serial numbers, as certified by numerous sources
  • Powered by the acclaimed 2,660 cc I4 engine from the Austin A90 Atlantic
  • 3-speed manual transmission
Opening the bonnet of this Big Healey is a real pleasure. The steel engine head sits inside a very well-presented engine compartment, with very few signs of general wear. Everything is pleasingly original, with no problems to highlight.
