The Appeal

As the earliest incarnation of the Type 2, the ‘Splitscreen’ is beloved by Volkswagen fans the world over and became a symbol of youth counter-culture during the 1960s when it was adopted by the hippie movement. Most popular in the form of campervans, Splitscreens are still immensely desirable and we’re delighted to offer this incredibly smart 1965 Kombi which has been restored to a very high standard.
The bodywork is in fantastic order, as is the paintwork and underside. Mechanically, just about everything has been renewed over the past two decades and inside, the camping interior has been sympathetically modernised to make it more usable. Beautifully presented and with an MOT valid until September 2024, this beautiful Type 2 is ready to enjoy.

  • Collection of old MOT certificates and servicing invoices present
  • Restored gradually over the past two decades
  • 58,527 kilometres indicated although we’re unable to confirm if this is authentic

The Interior

  • Sympatchitcally updated for ease of use
  • Pleasing two-tone upholstery all in fantastic order
  • All the cabinetry is in very good condition
  • Mad Matz carpet fitted
  • Uprated door cards, all in very good condition
  • The original controls all present well with some light patina
  • Retro-styled modern stereo system with numerous speakers found around the vehicle

  • The headlining looks to be in fine order throughout
  • UK three-pin electrical outlets
  • Rare glass partition present and separating the cab from the living quarters
  • Fire extinguisher affixed to the front bulkhead
  • TFT video screens mounted in the rear
  • Equipped with a reversing camera
We heartily approve of the way this interior has been refitted. It’s both contemporary and retro in equal measure which suits the feel of this van. There’s ample storage space thanks to the additional cabinetry, comfortable upholstery and versatile sleeping arrangements. All is in very good order with minimal wear to be seen.

The Exterior

  • Lovely cream paintwork
  • Smart chrome trims accented by a red coachline
  • Additional indicator side repeaters fitted on the B pillars
  • Very straight bodywork
  • No signs of corrosion
  • Well presented underneath
  • Headlamp shields fitted
  • The bumpers and side step in very good condition
  • All the glass presents well
  • OEM steel wheels with Wolfsburg crest embossed chrome hubcaps
  • Recent new tyres
  • No elevating roof
When someone says ‘classic campervan’, you of course think of the Splitscreen. It’s iconic and has a friendly image people love to see out and about. This one looks fabulous in cream and having been restored, the bodywork is impeccably presented. Free from signs of damage or corrosion, it’s a brilliant example example.

The Mechanics

  • New four-speed manual gearbox fitted in 2001
  • 1600 cc Volkswagen engine replaced in 2002
  • Uprated to servo-assisted disc brakes all-round in 2018
  • Weber twin-carb set fitted in 2020
  • Uprated exhaust system fitted
  • New gear linkages ensure relatively slick changes
  • Beautifully presented engine compartment
  • Said to run and drive exactly as it should
With an air-cooled boxer engine mounted aft, travelling in Type 2 is actually quite quiet and so perfect for longer journeys. This one has evidently received a great deal of mechanical attention over the years, with a replacement engine, gearbox, brakes and exhaust system meaning all feels tight and in rude health in terms of performance. The vendor informs us that it is fantastic to drive with no apparent faults.

Summary

This Volkswagen has clearly been much loved in recent years, having been restored to an exemplary standard. It’s ready to be enjoyed and is sure to be the perfect companion on your next road trip.
