Highlights

  • Exceedingly rare European-supplied Touring GTC, imported from France
  • Subject to an extensive specialist restoration in recent years
  • Road registered, reliable and ready to use

The Appeal

Besides the long-running Pininfarina Spider, Alfa Romeo offered another 105 Series convertible, based upon the Giugiario-designed Bertone Coupé. Known as the Giulia GTC, conversions were carried out by Touring of Milan, with only 1,000 ever built. Alfa Romeo collectors covet these vanishingly rare sports convertibles and finding a European-supplied example is increasingly challenging.
This 1966 GTC was supplied new to France and now resides in Italy where it has recently undergone an extensive restoration. Marque specialists carried out the work, so now this is one of the finest Giulia GTCs you're likely to find. Resplendent in the fetching and unusual colour, which is offset perfectly by a red interior, it’s an immensely handsome car and the vendor remarks that it always attracts admiring glances.

The History and Paperwork

  • European-supplied
  • One of one thousand made
  • Imported from France to Italy
  • Recently restored by Alfa Romeo specialists in Italy
  • It has only had two owners in Italy, of which the last one kept it for two years
  • The vendor informs us that the black and white plates currently fitted are for display purposes only, as the car needs to wear its white plates (with blue bands) on the road

The Condition

  • Converted in period by Touring of Milan
  • Early and desirable ‘step-nose’ Giulia
  • Showcases the classic combination of grey over a red interior
  • Folding soft top roof in very good order
  • Restored bodywork with no signs of corrosion or damage evident
  • Reupholstered during the restoration and no notable wear has been accrued since
  • The vendor acknowledges some very slight signs of use as the car, but certainly nothing especially noticeable
  • Very smart paintwork
  • We’re informed that the floors and sills are original and in very good condition
  • 15” steel wheels complete with chromed hubcaps
There are a lot of great names associated with the development of the GTC. A Touring-built special version of a car designed by the great Girgietto Giugaro on behalf of Bertone and powered by Giuseppe Busso’s Nord twin-camNord twin-cam - that’s certainly an illustrious backstory!

This example has been restored to a very good standard inside and out. There’s no notable wear to speak of as while the car has been used post-restoration, a great deal of care has been lavished upon it to ensure it remains in fantastic condition. The colour combination is magnificent and the intricate convertible hood still operates exactly as it should.

The Mechanics

  • 1600 cc all-alloy Nord twin-cam
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • Still fitted with a GTC engine (AR 00502), although not original to this car
  • Engine and gearbox rebuilt during the restoration
  • The vendor reports that the suspension and braking systems are both in top order
  • Beautifully presented under the bonnet
As with any 105 Series Alfa, the Giulia GTC drives beautifully, with tractable power from its rev-happy 1600 cc twin-cam, a long-legged five-speed gearbox and taught handling thanks to a low overall mass.
While this example’s original engine was lost many years ago, it is still fitted with a GTC engine - (a rarity when most are substituted for other 105 twin-cams). Mechanically rebuilt during the restoration, we’re assured that it runs very well indeed and drives exactly as it should with no faults to report.
