The Appeal

Giugiaro is not known for designing duds, but even by his standards the Ghibli coupe is spectacular. Seamlessly blending body and passenger compartment into a long, low and sleek coupe style it reinvented how GT cars could look and influenced a generation of designers.
Just 1,170 coupes like this one were built. It left the factory in 1969, living in the Rome area until 1976 when it transferred to the Chairman of the Swedish Maserati Club in Stockholm in 1976. The seller, a well known European classic car dealer, was first acquainted with the car as a 15 year old, travelling in the back with the new owner just after he bought it.
The previous keeper acquired the car as a restoration project, which he entrusted to specialist AMK. A comprehensive mechanical and bodywork restoration delivers the car you see now, finished in factory correct yellow with black interior.
The Ghibli is one of the 60s most beautiful and capable cars. And this one must be one of the best available.

Trust Giugiaro to pull it out of the bag. The Ghibli was a revelation, a very new sort of sleekly styled GT that looked quick even when it was standing still. It is a simple design that has since been much copied, but only the original contains the clever details that reveal the hand of Giugiaro like the pop up headlights and slender grille.
This car was restored in its original stand-out yellow by a well known marque specialist. The quality is obvious from the photographs. The attention to originality and factory-correct detail also impresses - look inside and out and you will find this car has been renovated to factory specification. In many ways, to a higher standard.

The Mechanics

  • Classic Maserati 4,719 cc hand-crafted V8 engine
  • 335bhp delivering 0-60mph in 6.8secs
  • 5spd manual gearbox
  • Original matching numbers car with matching engine and chassis
  • Mechanical restoration by marque specialist
  • Recent full engine service with new carburetor kit
  • Brakes, steering, and suspension reported to be in good working order
  • Cooling and exhaust systems function as expected
Maserati’s hand-built 4.7 litre V8 was easily the match of anything come out of Maranello at the time, embuing the Ghibli with exactly the high speed performance that buyers expected as they exploited Europe’s new trans-continental motorways.
The Ghibli was conceived as a relaxing, high performance GT but the manual box means it works equally well as an engaging and agile sports car. This car is a matching numbers example - it has always had its factory engine and gearbox - and the mechanicals were extensively restored during the renovation work. It is in very good mechanical condition requiring no work by the buyer.
