The Appeal

With the advent of the “muscle car” during the early 1960s, American manufacturers were all clamouring for the top spot. The concept was simple. Take a mid-size coupé and cram the biggest V8 you can muster under the bonnet. The Chevelle SS was Chevrolet’s early attempt at entering the muscle car battle and it proved immensely successful. Lauded for its sharp styling, blistering performance and of course lashings of chrome, the SS was one of the cars that would define the era.
Here we have a beautifully restored 1970 example, equipped with a 402 cu in (6.6-litre) “Big Block” and resplendent in gloss black. The extensive rebuild has been documented in a hardback coffee table book which accompanies the car. Following its arrival in Spain, air conditioning has been fitted, allowing comfortable cruising in hotter climes.
This all-American muscle car, featured in the movies 'Last of the Footsoldiers 3 & 4',  is ready to enjoy and could be yours…

The History and Paperwork

  • The vendor imported the car from the US to the UK in 2016
  • Currently located in Spain
  • Still UK-registered (and exempt from road tax/MOT-testing)
  • Logbook present
  • Incorrectly UK-registered as a 350 cu in (5.7-litre) engine when it is in fact a 402 cu in (6.6-litre)

The Condition

  • Sleek coupé bodywork finished in gloss black
  • A great deal of work was required to bring the body up to the standard it is today
  • Free from any signs of corrosion or damage
  • Period-correct performance wheels fitted with BG Goodrich tyres
  • Reupholstered seats with diamond stitching
  • Impeccable chromework
Having been subject to extensive restoration, this is a fantastic example that’s ready to go. The bodywork is now immensely straight and beautifully finished in a glossy coat of black paint. It sits upon period-correct wheels, which too have been finished superbly. They’re shod with BF Goodrich white-letter tyres which really look the part. To match, the chrome bumpers gleam and are free from any signs of deterioration.
Inside, we find the interior has been restored to mostly original specifications, with a few custom touches like extra gauges and diamond stitch upholstery. Stepping aboard transports you back to the seventies and it’s a pleasure to strike up that “Big Block” V8.

The Mechanics

  • 402 cu in (6.6-litre) “Big Block” V8 with 375 horsepower
  • Automatic gearbox
  • Beautifully presented engine compartment
  • Now equipped with air conditioning
  • Reportedly running and driving very well
With a fabulous soundtrack and incredible performance on offer, this Chevelle is a hoot to drive. The vendor says it can spin its tyres in every gear, which surely must be the measure of a true muscle car…
We’re assured that it drives very well indeed, with no issues to report whatsoever. With 375 horsepower to play with, we’re deeply envious of this Chevelle’s next owner.
