The Appeal

Enjoying immense success on the international rally stage, circuit racing and hill climbs, the Fiat 124 Spider has remained a fixture of the historic motorsport scene. That's what tempted the Salvage Hunters: Classic Cars team towards this example, an already well-prepared 124 Spider with race history. During the course of the show, they improved the looks and on-road usability, ensuring this track-ready car can also readily be driven on the public highway.

After stripping the shell back, it was revealed that the car was corrosion-free and had never required welding repairs. Subsequently finished in Rosso with a contrasting matt black bonnet and boot lid, it now pays homage to competition cars of the period. This Fiat looks the part as an historic racing car and is further enhanced by the custom sign writing, white roundels and gold Cromodora wheels.

Treated to a custom interior which incorporates a clever removable roll cage, Smiths digital instruments and Sparco seats, it strikes a perfect balance between the requirements of an historic racer and a usable road car.

Mechanically, it boasts an extensive and enviable specification, with several trick features like a limited-slip differential, alloy radiator, oil cooler and lightened flywheel helping to extract the best from its legendary Lampredi twin-cam.

With less than 500 miles driven since its TV appearance, this is a unique opportunity to own an incredibly well-sorted example.

History and Paperwork

  • Left-hand drive example dating from 1972

  • Advisory-free MOT valid until November 2024 (although exempt)
  • Indicates only 415 miles since its rebuild
  • Fully road-legal classic that's also eligible for historic events and shows
  • Previous competition success
  • Following the TV show, it was owned by one of the mechanics who planned to rally the car although deemed it "too nice"
  • Has attended several hill climbs and car shows in current ownership

Full file of history since being in the UK, including:

  • HSCC documents
  • TV show build sheet
  • Original Fiat provenance
  • Motorsport UK 'Vehicle Passport'

The Condition

  • Bodywork fully stripped as part of its rebuild
  • It now presents beautifully throughout
  • Fully resprayed in Rosso (red) over black, including inside and underside
  • Custom sign writing with the Salvage Hunters: Classic Cars team's names (water-based and removable)
  • Period-correct Cromodora alloys in gold
  • Toyo road legal semi-slick tyres (spare road wheels/tyres also available)
  • Custom interior with removable roll cage, custom-built dash, and one-piece aluminium centre console
  • New Smiths digital gauges and Sparco seats with harnesses

For those who have seen the episode of Salvage Hunters: Classic Cars in which this Fiat stars, you'll already know it was a great car to start with, but wasn't exactly nice to look at. Their team recognised its potential and coveted corrosion-free status, embarking on a full respray and the fabrication of a new custom interior. As you can see, this work was carried out to a very high standard and strikes the perfect balance between race and road specifications.

The Mechanics

  • Ellegi-built and race-tuned 1.6-litre Lampredi four-cylinder twin-cam
  • Genuine Abarth five-speed manual gearbox
  • Limited-slip differential
  • S/S race exhaust
  • Lightweight alternator and battery
  • Alloy oil cooler and radiator
  • Racing spec fully adjustable suspension (currently on a softer setting ideal for the road)
  • Foam-filled fuel cell and plumbed-in fire extinguisher
  • Adjustable brake pedal box with braided lines, new calipers, EBC pads and drilled discs
  • Competition clutch and lightened flywheel
  • Several recent improvements to reliability, including to the electrical system

The vendor reports that this car is immensely fun to drive, extracting ample performance from its highly tuned Lampredi twin-cam, which it puts down with ease thanks to a correspondingly uprated drivetrain.

We're informed that it really comes alive at over 4,000 rpm, with a throaty induction roar from its dual Weber carburettors. The lack of power steering or servo assistance assure this car offers a visceral driving experience, while its low overall mass and balanced controls ensure it's still delicate and precise at high speed.
