Highlights

  • Well cared for example of the front engine Porsche
  • Fully resprayed in 2020
  • Very reliable model, runs well

The Appeal

The second of Porsche’s attempt to move into the front-engine GT market, the 944 is a popular model among Stuttgart enthusiasts looking for the Porsche experience. With its long bonnet, Targa rear window and pop-up headlights, it is far from an ugly model and that is enhanced further by the full respray it received just a few years ago.

Throughout its life, this car has seemingly been well cared for with regular servicing, as the service book will prove. It reportedly starts, runs and drives brilliantly and is a reliable model.

Despite still featuring its original trim, the interior is very clean with only minor imperfections to spot. A rarely seen interior colour, it is sure to catch the eye.

History and Paperwork

  • First registered in 1985 in Switzerland
  • Three reported owners from new

  • Purchased by the current owner in 2019
  • Some work done since
  • Full respray in 2020
  • Garage kept, under cover
  • Original owner’s manual
  • Service booklet with many main dealer stamps
  • Government technical inspection will be redone in November

The Interior

  • Out of the ordinary colour upholstery, looks great
  • Original interior trim

Despite receiving a full respray just a few years ago, this 1985 Porsche 944 still presents its original interior upholstery according to the owner. However, the car reportedly comes with some new material, meaning a retrim is possible for the new owner.

The rarely seen dark red leather and fabric seats pair nicely with the exterior paint. Furthermore, the few black touches inside the cabin such as the dashboard lining and instrument cluster make for lovely details.

Despite its age, the cabin looks to be in great shape overall. The seats show few signs of wear, as is the case for the steering wheel. There are some signs of sun damage to the dashboard top above the instrument cluster. However, that appears to be the brunt of any major interior faults. Furthermore, we are told that almost everything inside works well.

A Blaupunkt radio has been fitted with CD changer in the glove box. Heating and blower controls all function as they should. However the trip reset button does fall into its hole at times according to the vendor.

The Exterior

  • Full respray in 2020, great colour
  • Fuchs wheels present wonderfully
  • Great condition throughout

As aforementioned, this 1985 Porsche 944 Targa was fully resprayed in 2020, with photos showing the process. It is now finished in a lovely coat, showing very few imperfections. At the same time, the Fuchs wheels were refurbished and all rubber seals were replaced. The result is a very good looking car with incredible road presence.

The vendor does point out that the right-hand side wing mirror features a small blemish. But there are no other easily noticeable flaws in the bodywork or paint.

All the light covers appear to be in good shape whilst the Targa rear boot looks wonderful. Finally, all black plastic details give the car a robust look that enhances its road presence.

The Mechanics

  • 2.5-litre inline-four, 160hp
  • Well cared for throughout its life
  • Very reliable car according to the vendor

A base variant of the Porsche 944, this 1985 model features a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre inline four engine. Sending 160hp to the rear wheels, it is plenty to have fun on country roads, especially thanks to the lively five-speed manual transmission.

Throughout its life, this car has seemingly been well cared for. For many early years living in Switzerland, it received regular main dealer services. The service history book proves this with many stamps. Furthermore, it has always been garage kept. The car reportedly had a clean technical inspection showing no advisories last year. It will be put through a new one prior to the sale.

Since being bought by the current owner, a number of jobs have been completed, notably a timing belt replacement. The vendor does point out that the car could do with a new rear left bearing.

Overall, the vendor highlights that this is a clean car that runs and drives well. It is reportedly very reliable and starts with ease.

Summary

A very clean car inside and out, this Porsche 944 benefits from a full respray just a few years ago, making for impressive road presence. Mechanically, it is reportedly very sound with perhaps a few minor jobs left to complete.
