The Appeal

Introduced in 1966 and also called "Duetto" after a very successful competition had invited the Italians to baptize it, the Alfa Romeo Spider draped the appreciated underpinnings of the previous Giulia and Giulietta spiders with taut and modern lines supervised by Battista Pininfarina and inspired by the Alfa Romeo 6C Superflow IV dream car.
With its all aluminium DOHC engines, four disc brakes and a responsive five-speed gearbox, the low and light Alfa Spider offers remarkable performance and was immediately appreciated, being produced in four series for almost thirty years.
For the the fourth and last series, presented in 1990, Pininfarina returned to its origins, creating a clean and streamlined design, eliminating the spoilers and aerodynamic appendages from the eighties and introducing new body-coloured bumpers integrated into the bodywork and striking horizontal taillights similar to those of the Alfa 164.

Two four-cylinder engines were offered, a 1,6 litres with 2 double-barrel Weber carburettors, the last carbureted engine mounted on an Alfa Romeo, and a 2 litres with electronic injection.
Starting from an already well-kept example of the rare and increasingly coveted last generation Alfa Spider, this Duetto has been professionally repainted in its original Metallic Grey, and the seats have been reupholstered in correct tan leather.

Many interior and exterior details have been replaced and the mechanics have been carefully serviced.
The car has been equipped with a new soft top and is complemented by its original, rare and valuable hard top.
Once listened to, the sound of the Alfa Romeo twin cam motor with twin carburettors is impossible to forget.

Furthermore, in this car, the absence of the roof makes the experience even more engaging and exciting, making it an almost irresistible temptation for a true Alfista and every car enthusiast.

The cabin of this Duetto is characterized by clean and flowing lines that make it particularly pleasant and welcoming.
The seating position is quite low but comfortable and well laid-out.
The gearbox, topped by a nice wood knob, is peculiarly placed quite high in the center console in an almost horizontal position and is extremely easy to reach and rewarding to use.
In this particular car, the good condition of all the surfaces allows us to appreciate even better the harmony of the overall design and the many details that enrich it.
The dashboard is not damaged or faded and the reupholstered seats and the leather door cards are very attractive.

Behind the beautiful four-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel, the large and clean instrument cluster houses two circular Jager main gauges and a vast array of instruments and indicators.

All the brightwork is in very good condition, including the door handles and the window cranks, which have been replaced, and the unscuffed chrome-plated door sill plates.
A new soft top and the rare original hard top finish off the cabin in the best possible way, ensuring a comfortable ride.
The driving experience of this Spider is a mix of old-style charm and modern comfort.
With the enthralling soundtrack produced by the revvy DOHC engine and the induction sound of the twin double-barrel carburettors, every step on the gas pedal is exhilarating and makes us feel at the helm of a true, uncompromised Italian sports car.

The road holding is excellent, and driving this car on a twisty road can be very rewarding.
At the same time, the well-appointed cabin can be a very nice place to be during a relaxing outing.

Summary

The historical importance of the Alfa Romeo Spider cannot be underestimated.
All series of the Duetto, a mechanical masterpiece and a reference point for its unique and refined style, are highly sought-after by vintage car collectors.
As values of Alfa Spiders of all series keep climbing, the much more usable, comfortable and fast fourth series, with pure lines and very well appointed interiors, represents a purchase of great prestige and sure future appreciation.
This well presented car with interesting specifications is one of the last produced before the model was finally replaced and one of the very last Alfa Romeos equipped with the famed twin-cam twin-carbureted engine and will delight the lucky enthusiast who will decide to make it his own for years to come.
