The Appeal
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class ‘W124’ is seen by many as one of the company’s finest hours.
Launched in 1986 to replace the legendary but long-in-the-tooth W123 series, the 124 was exquisitely engineered, one of the last truly over-developed and beautifully built Benzes.
It felt old-fashioned when it was launched – but in a good way. As if it were made to feel deliberately archaic because Mercedes knew that, almost four decades after it launched, there would still be loads left in service throughout the world.
And there are. From multi-million-kilometre taxi cabs in far-flung corners of Africa, to boulevard-cruising coupes and cabriolets in California, the W124 is one of those global icons. A great car, a well-loved icon and one of the best vehicles in the world.
Among the many 124s built, it’s those with the fewest doors that are arguably the most desirable. Dubbed the C124, the two-door Coupé model is a real standout in that line-up, especially when equipped with a 3.0-litre straight six under the bonnet.
And that’s what we have here – a gorgeous example with a fully documented history, purchased by the current owner in 2020 and substantially overhauled in his custodianship with almost all of the suspension and various mechanical parts renewed. It really is as lovely as they come – finished to an exacting level of detail that makes feel as tight and sharp as a new one.
The History and Paperwork

- Owned by the family from 1996 to 2020
- Used minimally over the past decade, with MOT certificates showing less than 250 miles over 10 years – but always kept tested
- Purchased by the vendor during lockdown and mechanically overhauled over a two-year period with a complete suspension rebuild
The Condition
- Stunning Pearl Blue metallic paint with a lovely shine
- 15-inch factory alloy wheels with no kerb marks and recent new tyres all-round – fully refusbished and fitted with new centre caps
- Stated by the vendor to be excellent underneath having received two very small areas of welding after being stripped back, then rust-treated and undersealed
- Excellent paint finish with some tiny areas of micro-blistering and evidence of previous paint repairs to the sunroof, which is a very slightly different shade
- No apparent corrosion to the wings, sills and rear wheelarches
- Smart blue leather interior
- Very, very minor patina to leather seat facings but nothing of any note – just gentle signs of age
- Electronic “seatbelt butlers” in good working order
- Lovely carpets, headlining and door cards

- New timing chain tensioner, copper fuel lines, drive belt tensioner and full oil and filter service

- Gearbox serviced with new oil and filters and rubber drive doughnut

- All suspension components renewed with bushes, mounts, control arms, springs, driveshafts, shock absorbers, track rods, steering dampers and drag links
