Introduced in 1975 as a replacement for the E-Type, the Jaguar XJ-S was more of a grand tourer than its predecessor, designed principally to be supremely comfortable over long distances while boasting competitive performance and sharp styling. In all those respects, it proved a great success and by the time production of the XJS (now bereft of hyphen) came to market in 1996, it was Jagaur's longest running model.
Fitted with either a straight-six or the larger V12, the XJ-S/XJS has been offered in various forms including a coupé, targa, and fully open convertible by the late '80s. Over the years, there have been several cosmetic changes, but in 1991, under the new owner, Ford Motor Company, it received its final facelift and was fitted with the later and improved AJ16 engine. The new engine jumped from the previous 3.6 litres to 4.0 litres, improving performance and fuel efficiency.
This stunning 1995 example has spent most of its life in California's warm climate, having just two registered keepers prior to UK import. The vendor imported the car in 2021 and has covered approximately 2,000 miles since. They have recently had the car serviced and the air conditioning re-gassed, ensuring it is ready for its new lucky custodian. The MOT runs until May 2024 and is free from advisories.

The Jaguar's paintwork is superb and finished in Straight Black (Code PDT); black either looks outstanding or acceptable, depending on how it's been cared for over the years. This is amazing!
Starting at the front, the vendor has opted for a de-chromed look, which has been applied to the chrome bumper caps, grille, and headlight surrounds and works exceptionally well against the gloss black paintwork. The headlights are in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, and the indicators are the same. The bonnet, boot lid and doors align as they should with equal panel gaps, and it is worth noting that all of the panels on the car retain their original Jaguar Cars Vehicle Identification Number decal. The windscreen frame has been left chrome and is in excellent condition, as is the windscreen, which has no noticeable scratches or chips.
Looking along the smooth sides, there are no apparent dents and the chrome door mirrors and door handles appear in excellent condition. The windows operate as you would expect and are all in good order, as are the seals
The black fabric roof is in very good condition; there are a couple of minor marks noted, but nothing which has damaged the roof. This operates as it should at the touch of a button going up and down and sits nice and tight when up. When lowered, it sits level, allowing the tonneau cover to be fitted easily.
Finishing off the exterior is the stunning set of XJ R Sport wheels, which have been painted in body colour Black (PDT) and fitted with a matching set of Goodyear tyres. These tyres have covered approximately 1,000 miles since being fitted, so they are in like-new condition.
Inside, the Jaguar presents very well; the electric Warm Charcoal (Code LEG) black leather seats are in superb condition and working as they should. There are no signs of shining on the leather or any signs of heavy use, even in high-wear areas such as the driver’s bolster.
Both door cards are also in excellent condition, as is the dashboard with no notable wear to any of the switchgear or controls.
The Burr walnut fascias look to be free from any splits or cracks, the instruments are reportedly working correctly and the odometer shows a reading of just 48,642 miles. There is a Pioneer CD head unit fitted, which we're informed is working as it should.
The carpets in the cabin are excellent; these have been protected with a set of factory mats. Lifting up the carpet, you can see the floor, which is spotlessly clean with no areas of concern. Inside the boot looks is in the same excellent condition. There is a tonneau cover bag, a full original jack, and a wheel brace in its correct bag, and the spare wheel is an XJ R Sport to match the rest.
Using the later type AJ16 engine, the 4.0-litre 24-valve straight-six starts up without hesitation. The vendor has recently had the car serviced, and also, the air conditioning has been re-gassed, meaning everything is reported to be in good order and running as it should.
We're informed that the four-speed gearbox has a silky smooth change when out on the road, and the 4.0-litre straight-six pulls strongly through the entire rev range. In true GT fashion, the suspension soaks up the bumps with ease, and no knocks or bangs are reported to come from either corner of the car. The brakes bring the XJS to a stop in a straight line with no juddering reported to come through the pedal.
The underside of the car appears very clean indeed; there are no obvious signs of surface corrosion to any of the suspension components, and everything appears to be in good order.
