The Appeal

Compared to its Aston Martin and Ferrari rivals, Maserati has always offered a more cosseted approach to the business of getting from A to B very quickly.  With the 4200GT of 2001 it evolved the beautiful Giugiaro-penned design of its coupe and convertible by adding even more power.

This 2004 coupe is one of the very rare full manual GTs – only of only 1,078 built – and looks immaculate in Blu Sebring metallic with a light grey leather interior.  It is a low mileage, low owner car with full service history – by Maserati and specialists – that appears to have been very well maintained.  There is significant recent mechanical expenditure including clutch, gearbox and suspension work.  The 4200 is a very well sorted Italian GT and this one has clearly been looked after.

The Interior

  • Grigio Chiara grey leather interior in very good condition
  • Infotainment system
  • Switchgear professionally restored
  • Carpets and overmats in very good condition
  • Rear seats appear unused
The subdued Grigio Chiara leather interior of this 2004 4200GT neatly complements the blue bodywork and is in very good condition. The rear seats look like new.  Just very light wear on the driver’s seat, including creases on the headrest, indicate that this is a 19 year old car.

The high specification includes electric heated front seats, an infotainment system and boot-mounted CD multi-changer.  The switchgear is in very good condition.  The Seller tells us that it has been professionally restored to overcome the ‘sticky button’ problem typical of this model whereby the plastic coating deteriorates.

The light grey carpets and overmats are in very good condition, reflecting the low mileage of the car.  The trim covering the surface of the passenger door airbag and passenger facing airbag is wavey but likely reflects that this is a hand built car and such imperfections are to be expected.  Similarly, there are crease marks around the glovebox handle.

The boot contains the CD multi-changer.  The glue for the carpet surrounding this unit has deteriorated and may benefit from being re-applied.  There is a complete Maserati toolkit and even the Maserati-branded tyre sealant kit is present.

The Exterior

  • Blu Sebring metallic paintwork recently machine polished and ceramic coated by the Seller
  • Bodywork is unmarked save for small chips on the inside edge of the passenger door
  • Quality Uniroyal 18inch tyres fitted
  • Factory alloy wheels refurbished by Seller and unmarked
  • Stainless steel grille fitted
The rightness of Guigiaro’s original 1998 GT design is reflected in the car’s 10 year production run and just how good it still looks now, 25 years on.  It is a sculptural shape that is very Maserati, reflecting the designer’s experience penning previous Maserati icons like the Merak, Bora and Ghibli.

The Blu Sebring metallic paintwork seems to particularly suit the design, offering an understated style.  It is in very good condition, with no obvious marks.  A recent full machine polish and ceramic coating has certainly helped.  The only marks are very minor and not visible with the doors closed – there are a number of small chips on the edge of the passenger door.

The car is fitted with Uniroyal 18inch tyres and its original factory alloys.  The Seller states that these have been recently been refurbished and they appear unmarked in the photographs.

The front number plate has a crack in it, likely caused by a stone chip.  It appears to be the original supplying dealer plate.

The underside shows areas of surface corrosion which are typical of the age of the car.  They may benefit from a wire brush and wax oil regime to help keep the car in its otherwise pristine condition.

The Mechanics

  • 4.2litre F136 Ferrari-Maserati jointly developed V8 engine developing 385bhp
  • 0-60mph in 5.2secs
  • 6spd fully manual gearbox
  • LeoNardo custom sports exhaust with quad pipes
  • Full service history to 43,852 miles in June 2022
  • MOT to May 2023 with minor advisories for rear brake discs, rear shock absorbers and rear suspension pin
  • New clutch and gearbox service in January 2020 at 37,365 miles at cost of £3,000
  • Suspension work in July 2020 at cost of £1,500
The 385bhp 4.2litre V8 engine powering this GT is part of the F136 family of Ferrari-Maserati engines, all of which are built by the Maranello concern.  In this car it is mated to a full manual gearbox – rather than the manual/automatic hybrid of most 4200GTs – which makes it one of only 1,078 of this type built during the 4200GT’s 6 year production run.

The 4200GT is a transaxle design, with the differential also built in, which gives the car even weight distribution and improved handling.
The key to Maserati ownership is regular servicing and maintenance by the right specialists.  This low mileage example has exactly that: all of the work has been done by Maserati dealers or specialists, most recently McGrath’s where close to £5,000 has been invested since 2020.

This work has included a new clutch in January 2020 – around 6,500 miles ago – when the car also received a gearbox service and flush.  In July 2020 there was suspension work totalling just short of £1,500.
The service history shows the last service was in June 2022 and the car has covered just 166 miles in the intervening period.  The same applies to the MOT, which runs to May 2023.  There are some advisories on the MOT that the buyer may wish to note, including for the rear brake discs, rear shock absorbers and a rear suspension pin.

The engine bay looks generally tidy, just some cosmetic cracks on the crackle surface of the stylish engine cover detracting.

Summary

The 4200GT fits into the long tradition of Giugiaro-designed Maseratis and is arguably one of his finest.  A supremely capable GT car, from its sonorous Ferrari-built V8 to its sumptuous interior, it is one to be savoured and enjoyed, much like Italy’s many fine wines.

This low mileage, low owner 4200GT is one of the rare full manual versions and finished in attractive unmarked Blu Sebring metallic.  The history file shows fastidious and significant recent expenditure, all by Maserati specialists, suggesting a careful Seller.  If you are after a fast, comfortable and rare Italian thoroughbred, this distinctive 4200GT looks a tempting choice.
