The Appeal
With the long run of brutally capable Lancer Evos, it’s easy to get caught in a specification wormhole. So let's be clear - this car is amongst the most special of a large number of special cars. That’s because it is the ultra-rare Mitsubishi Racing ‘MR,’ which was only available on the EV VIII for two years from 2004 to 2005 with just 3,030 sold worldwide. Initially available only as a JDM car, the MR’s brilliance quickly saw Mitsubishi releasing it for worldwide buyers.
What sets the MR apart is a very long list of detail improvements, all focused on delivering a lighter, faster car with a lower centre of gravity. Key upgrades include Bilstein shocks, aluminium roof skin, 6spd close ratio gearbox, revised turbo for the 4G63T 2L engine and retuned AWD electrics. Aside from discreet badging, these cars cane be identified by their BBS alloys, Recaro sports seats and mix of carbon and aluminium cabin trim.
This 2004 MR is an early, original JDM MR that arrived in the UK in 2005. Since then, it’s had just two registered keepers. The car looks standard but has been extensively upgraded as detailed below. This includes RC Developments' drop-in forged pistons and rod package. The work delivers 398bhp at the wheels according to a dyno readout. A massive history file accompanies the car and shows regular work throughout its time in the UK. It was last serviced in early 2024 and comes with a lengthy MOT valid to April 2027.
