The Appeal

R.J. Searle Ltd is of course known for their ‘Carawagon’ conversions whereby Series Land Rovers were transformed into overland campervans. Here we have something a little more unusual, one of five ‘incident vehicles’ commissioned by the City of London Ambulance Service. It remained in their fleet until 2003 and has since been in the hands of Land Rover collectors.

With its coachbuilt raised roof devised by Searle, this Series IIA 109” would make the perfect camper conversion, with ample headroom to stand inside which most Land Rovers lack. It remains in fantastic condition, retaining much of its originality and the vendor reports that it runs and drives well following refurbishment carried out in 2016/17.

The History and Paperwork

Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
One of just five “high-top” vehicles commissioned by the City of London Ambulance Service
Maintained by the Ambulance Service until 2003 when it left their fleet
Refurbished in 2016/17 to MOT standard (although not submitted for testing)

Period registration plates and badges exhibiting a pleasing patina
Slight rust staining to the original galvanising, although it is still eminently serviceable
Rugged and minimalist interior typical of a Series IIA
The ‘Deluxe’ vinyl seats all present well, with some light age-commensurate wear

Retains its R.J. Searle build plates on each end of the seat box
