Highlights

The Appeal

R.J. Searle Ltd is of course known for their ‘Carawagon’ conversions whereby Series Land Rovers were transformed into overland campervans. Here we have something a little more unusual, one of five ‘incident vehicles’ commissioned by the City of London Ambulance Service. It remained in their fleet until 2003 and has since been in the hands of Land Rover collectors. 
With its coachbuilt raised roof devised by Searle, this Series IIA 109” would make the perfect camper conversion, with ample headroom to stand inside which most Land Rovers lack. It remains in fantastic condition, retaining much of its originality and the vendor reports that it runs and drives well following refurbishment carried out in 2016/17.

The History and Paperwork

  • Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
  • One of just five “high-top” vehicles commissioned by the City of London Ambulance Service
  • Maintained by the Ambulance Service until 2003 when it left their fleet
  • Refurbished in 2016/17 to MOT standard (although not submitted for testing)
  • The 92,193 indicated miles appears correct although we’re unable to verify its accuracy
  • The vendor advises a service is carried out prior to resuming regular use as the Land Rover has spent some time stationary as part of the vendor’s collection
  • Owing to a change of circumstances, the vendor is reducing their Land Rover collection
  • A selection of period photographs showing the Land Rover in its original livery are present
  • V5C up-to-date 
  • Two previous keepers

The Condition

  • The rear is now empty and therefore perfect for a camper conversion or could easily be fitted with seats if required
  • Originally white and in ambulance livery - now refinished in Land Rover Limestone 
  • Recent new Avon tyres fitted to the OEM steel wheels
  • Period registration plates and badges exhibiting a pleasing patina
  • Slight rust staining to the original galvanising, although it is still eminently serviceable
  • Rugged and minimalist interior typical of a Series IIA
  • The ‘Deluxe’ vinyl seats all present well, with some light age-commensurate wear
  • Currently seats three 
  • Retains its R.J. Searle build plates on each end of the seat box

The Mechanics 

  • 2.25-litre four-cylinder petrol engine
  • Four-speed manual gearbox with selectable low range and four-wheel drive
  • The vendor advises a service is carried out before regular use
  • No known faults reported
