The Appeal

Introduced in 1965, the TR4A is yet another example of Triumph’s ever-impressive reputation for the classic British roadster. Introduced with independent rear suspension - hence the IRS in the name - these peppy little cars were smack-bang in the middle of the company’s development. Indeed, the IRS system became commonplace in the next two generations of the TRs. 
This example is particularly well-to-do, with plenty of recent work carried out and an extensive history file. 

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in 1967
  • Underwent an overhaul in 1984
  • The DVLA notes that the car was repainted to red in 1984
  • Between 1998 and 2001 the car was completely restored and repainted
  • MOT expired in March 2023, though it is exempt
  • Latest MOT test was passed with zero advisories
  • Interestingly the car starred in an advertising campaign for Red X Petrol Treatment
  • In current ownership since 2020
  • Odometer indicates 05,962 - seller tells us it was zeroed when it was restored
  • Car comes complete with a binder of paperwork including:
    • V5c document
    • Record of the restoration
    • Original display card for shows
    • Copies of the Red X Petrol Treatment advertisements it starred in
    • An extensive collection of MOT certificates
    • A selection of invoices 

The Interior

  • Beautifully presented interior
  • Black leather seats and door cards
  • Some light patina, though nothing of significance
  • The dashboard is currently a teak panel, carrying some wear
  • A factory-accurate walnut dash is ready to be fitted
  • All instruments present clean and well with no faults, cracks or fogging we can spot
  • Branded steering wheel in good order with some light wear
  • The carpets are in good order with no rips or tears
  • Boot floors are solid with a spare wheel in situ
Loaded with period features, this beautifully presented interior is a great ambassador to the style of the great British roadster. Everything here is in excellent order, with a superb level of authenticity. A new walnut dashboard is available to be fitted to the car. 
We can spot very few signs of this car’s age in its cabin, and if you’re a fan of top-down driving, we’re sure there’s nowhere you’d rather be!

The Exterior 

  • Attractive red paintwork
  • Subject to a restoration from 1998 to 2001
  • Paintwork is still in excellent order with no significant faults we can spot
  • Some very slight chips and marks commensurate with the paint’s age
  • Chromework is strill brightly contrasting throughout
  • All branding is present and correct
  • Light lenses and glasswork look in good order
  • Black soft top is in good order with light marks and wear
  • A new tonneau cover is also included with the car
  • Wire spoke wheels in good order with only light patina
  • Michelin XZX tyres look to have plenty of tread
  • Only light wear on the underside
Fully restored from 1998 to 2001, this TR4A looks resplendent while still carrying a level of patina. The result is a charming little car that’s ready and waiting to hit the road. The paintwork and chromework is bright and displays beautifully on the car’s ever-endearing styling.
We’ve no doubt that it’ll turn plenty of heads on the road - and provide plenty of smiles to any driver.

The Mechanics 

  • Powered by a 2,138cc I4 powerplant
  • 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive
  • Recently subject to extensive work including:
    • Carb refurbishment
    • Brake overhaul with new discs, callipers and pads
    • New high output coil, solenoid, distribution cap leads and plugs
    • Full oil change and new filters
  • The car is staring first time, with the vendor informing us that it’s running perfectly
  • We’ve no reports of any leaks, knocks, bangs or smoke
  • The engine bay is clean and well-kept with no concerns we can spot under the bonnet
Ready and waiting to return to the road, the Triumph I4 powerplant is all present and correct, with twin carbs recently refurbished and the head nicely presented, still offering a bright reflection. The metalwork surrounding it is still nice and clean, and there are no signs of leaks, bubbling over or corrosion throughout.
We’re sure that car will make a fabulous companion out on the open road, and a very evocative drive for any Triumph aficionado. 

Summary

Presented in smashing, drivable condition, this is a superb example - and still carries plenty of period character that’s sure to please any enthusiast.
