The Appeal

 
The absolute pinnacle of what a car can be. The Jaguar E Type is a car that seldom needs introduction in automotive circles. A design masterclass with the performance credentials to back up its striking good looks, the E Type is a model that could comfortably sell itself on appearances alone, but in reality is a car that does so much more than that, in pure unadulterated class.
 
This 1969 Series 2 E Type is one such example of the breed. In desirable, and collectible “fixed head coupe” format, it has undergone some extensive refurbishment in its more recent life, with a solid selection of invoices for parts and labour stowed in its rather comprehensive recent history file. It stands today in generally presentable but slightly tatty form, exhibiting as a wonderful entry into the thoroughly rewarding world of E Type ownership or as a car with great scope and potential to be taken up a level or two by the new keeper depending on their standards.
 

 

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 1969
  • RHD example, understood to be a UK market car originally
  • As we understand the car was exported in its past life but has since returned to the UK
  • The car was purchased in 2011 as requiring restoration, and we are informed that the car was subsequently stripped, resprayed and treated to a general refurbishment
  • Solid well sized recent history file
  • Many invoices for labour alongside both new and refurbished parts
  • Both tax and MOT exempt due to the car’s age and historic status
  • Despite exemption the car holds a current MOT valid with no advisories until July 2025
  • The car is currently undergoing the process of removing the private registration “93 ET”, however the vendor advises this registration will be available under separate negotiation
  • V5 registration document present with the car

 

The Condition

  • Finished in striking red colourway

It is well known among the classic car world that upon the launch of the E-Type, Enzo Ferrari was reported to have called the model, “the most beautiful car ever made”. It’s a statement that arguably still rings true some 60 years later, and this wonderful Series 2 FHC certainly makes a great case for it.
 
A vibrant red hue adorns the sweeping lines of the Jaguar, this paintwork was laid down as part of the post 2011 refurbishment as we understand, and whilst it stands today in generally good presentable form, there are some areas of blemishing and cracking to be seen in areas that would like some improvement should the Jaguar be taken down in the show car direction. Lashings of good quality chrome trim find themselves adorned to the car's bodywork and they remain in generally clean form, with a great deal of it having also been purchased and installed as part of the aforementioned refurbishment we understand to have been undertaken on the car.
 
Glass work, lights and badging all present in good shape, and in the efforts of sleek design, a solid roof panel sits in the place of the often seen Webasto ragtop setup. At ground level a delightful set of chrome wire wheels are the star of the show, with a fifth full sized example residing under the removable panel in the trimmed boot floor.
 
Moving inside, what was understood to have originally been a cabin trimmed in a deep black, now presents in an arguably far more suitable cream colour scheme with accompanying red detailing. The car found itself partially retrimmed as part of its refurbishment, and so whilst the cabin could benefit from a general neaten up and completion should the new owner wish to bring the car up to a certain standard, the quality of the upholstery work undertaken already is of an acceptable standard, making for a useable interior space in its current state, with leather seating, dash and door panels, vibrant red piping and detailing alongside a great selection of fixtures, fascias and accompanying trim already firmly in place.
 

 

The Mechanics

  • 4.2 litre inline six engine

Under the front hinged bonnet of the E Type lies a wonderful six cylinder symphony of Jaguar engineering. The 4.2 litre inline unit is reportedly good for around 245bhp, providing great overall power delivery and a classic inline six soundtrack for good measure. When paired with a manual transmission, as the car we have here is, the 4.2 litre E Type is a real thrill to drive.
 
The engine and surrounding engine bay in this particular car present well in good clean order, firing into life well and settling into a comfortable idle. Though whilst the car does run smoothly and drive, it has been used rather sparingly since its refurbishment in 2011 and so the vendor advises that a good going over is performed prior to any use. We are also informed that the manual transmission is a little notchy, difficult to get into reverse and sometimes popping out of fourth gear, however no further inspection has been undertaken on this issue. The car does hold a current, MOT valid until July 2025, and the underside looks to be in generally clean fettle, however the vendor does also note a slight squeak they feel is coming from the steering column.

 

 

 

Summary

 
It quite possibly is the ultimate classic car, most definitely one of the most iconic. When one is told to think of either a cult classic car, British car or stylish sports car what else comes to the forefront of the mind more so than a beautiful E type Jaguar in coupe form?
 
This Series 2 FHC is a wonderful car that could comfortably be taken down many avenues. Whether it be to be used on a more regular basis in its current aesthetic state or to be lightly refurbished or taken further as a true show piece, this E Type holds great potential and simply needs a new loving owner to get behind the wheel.
