The Appeal

This example is one of the limited edition Biturbo Si Black models of which only 400 or so were thought to have been produced. This edition pairs a special black over grey colourway with the Si’s boosted 220bhp power output. This example is clearly lightly used and exudes all the quirky charm associated with the individually designed Biturbo.

The History and Paperwork

• This Biturbo was produced as one of only around 400 Black editions built
• The car rolled out of the Modena factory in 1987
• This was the last production year for the original phase of Biturbo
• The first phase can be identified by the four lug alloy wheels as opposed to five
• The Black edition was an Italy only model so this was a domestic market car
• At some point in its history the car was relocated to Sweden
• The car is currently located and registered in Sweden
• The car is complete with its Swedish registration documents
• The current owner also reports that service records are available
• Two original keys are also on hand

The Interior

• This Maserati features a charming and delightfully period interior
• Upholstery is courtesy of ruched tan leather and complimentary Alcantara
• Ample varnished wood veneer accents are also in evidence
• The front seats are deeply bolstered at the thigh and waist
• The seat centres are finished in tan leather and are stitched into horizontal box pleats
• The bolsters are finished in luxurious Alcantara
• The condition appears very good indeed and in keeping with the car’s light use
• A little pilling is noted to the driver’s bolster together with a small hole
• The rear cabin is arranged into two separate seats identically trimmed to the fronts
• A fold down central arm rest is finished
• Small storage pockets are located in the back of the front seats
• The side panels are finished in tan leather with Alcantara insets
• Walnut veneer panels are set into these near their tops
• These continue forward and into the front door cards
• The headlining is formed of padded Alcantara panels
• Cabin carpets are finished in an intriguing tweed-style self-pattern
• These are edge bound for longevity 
• The dashboard consists of stitched leather trimmed top and bottom rolls
• The veneer panel from the door cards continues around to form the dash’s centre panel
• A deeply hooded binnacle sits directly ahead of the driver
• This houses a comprehensive set of white on black gauges
• A big speedometer and tachometer sit at the centre with a turbo boost gauge 
• Four smaller dials monitor other mechanical systems
• These sit behind a dark brown, four spoke steering wheel
• The wide centre console is finished in stitched leather
• This houses the heating and ventilation controls 
• A more modern Pioneer head unit is also fitted here
• A polished walnut gear knob tops the five-speed gear lever
• The signature, elliptical, ivory faced Maserati clock is also noted
• The boot is trimmed in black carpet
• The original, drop-down tool kit is present and fully stocked

The Exterior

• This example presents very well indeed in its special black and grey livery
• The bulk of the car is finished in shiny Nero black
• The lower sections of the car are finished in Soft Grey Metallizzato
• This combination makes up the special Black Edition livery
• The condition of the car’s paintwork looks to be in a fine overall condition
• A small area of paint imperfection is noted on the passenger door
• Otherwise, a deep and lustrous shine is noted throughout
• The bodywork looks equally well presented with tight panel gaps in evidence
• Some smart Biturbo touches include the deep boot spoiler the C pillar Trident badging
• Cabin glass and light lenses all appear clear, undamaged and original
• This Biturbo sits on an original set of four lug Maserati alloy wheels
• These feature deeply polished centred and rims
• The inset sections are finished in body matching grey
• The condition appears generally good with a little tarnishing noted in places
• Trident centre caps are fitted to each wheel

The Mechanics

• This Italian market Biturbo is fitted with a two litre V6 engine with twin turbos
• The Italian tax system of the time levied a 38% duty on cars over two litres
• This steered the choice of a 2-litre unit in this market
• The Black Edition adopted the mechanical of the Si model
• This model was fuel injected and produced 220bhp
• Power is fed to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox

• The intake is finished in a red crackle texture paint with a large trident emblem present
