The Appeal
Replacing a motoring icon is never easy—and that was the tall order the Jaguar XJS faced. Following in the tyre tracks of the E-Type, the XJS had a lot to live up to. No surprise, then, that it got off to a bit of a shaky start. Talk about stage fright! By the 1980s, however, it had found its stride—settling into life as a laid-back, long-legged grand tourer with just the right amount of swagger.
Fast forward to the '90s, and Jaguar was readying the XJS for a graceful exit—but not without a proper send-off. After a 21-year production run—not bad for a car that once faced criticism for being ‘not an E-Type’—the final examples were dubbed ‘Celebration’ models and came fully dressed for the occasion. Diamond-turned 16-inch alloy wheels, a leather and wood steering wheel, leaper-embossed headrests, and piped leather seats all came as standard.
This particular example has been with its current keeper since April 2017 and has had just four owners in total—the first held onto it for two full decades. Finished in an elegant grey metallic over cream leather with darker piping and bird’s eye maple trim, the odometer indicates 79,001 miles at the time of cataloguing. Used particularly sparingly in the seller’s ownership, the car has benefitted from the recent fitment of polyurethane bushes, and the 4.0-litre inline-six injectors have also been recently replaced, ensuring it remains a smooth and graceful ‘gentleman’s express’.
