Harley-Davidson; arguably the most modified, improved, individualised and customised of any Motor Cycle brand, period. Perhaps accepting the inevitable, they even did it themselves with the FX(Factory Experimental)R which is pretty much universally tagged ‘the best Harley ever made’ and a high water mark for the company globally. The FXR had a lighter yet stronger version of the FLT Tour Glide frame and took the best bits from the range and blended them together to produce an iconic 1980s machine that gave the Japanese brands some serious competition. So if you are going to build a custom Harley, the FXR is the best stepping off point and if you go for a post 1984 machine you get the Evolution engine, up 29cc from the earlier 80 cubic inch unit to 1340cc to go with the five speed gear box.
