1934 Riley Nine Lynx from long term ownership
This Riley Nine Lynx has been in the same ownership for the past 25 years, during which time it has been continuously and thoughtfully improved with an emphasis on originality, reliability and performance.
The coachwork has been restored to original specification, with the paintwork finished in oven-cured two-pack acrylic. Mechanically, the car has benefited from a comprehensive engine rebuild, completed 26, 000 miles ago, using a new Riley Register crankshaft. The engine block was re-sleeved to accept standard pistons, with the crankshaft and connecting rods fully balanced. This work was undertaken by Hamlin’s of Bridgwater and further enhanced with Newman Imp-profile camshafts, twin HO SU carburettors and a four-branch exhaust manifold.
Additional mechanical improvements include a new clutch, ERA roller-bearing universal joint, new muff coupling, replacement helical gears, mechanical rev counter, electronic ignition, voltage regulator and an electric cooling fan. A stainless-steel fuel tank and stainless-steel exhaust system have also been fitted.
The steering and suspension have been comprehensively addressed, with all joints renewed and the springs reset. The wheels have been refurbished and powder-coated. Internally, the car is trimmed in red Connolly hide, while the hood and side screens have been made to the correct original specification. The headlamps have been upgraded and are relay-controlled for safe and reliable operation.
On the road, the engine is particularly sweet-running, offering a noticeable increase in performance over a standard unit. The steering is precise and accurate, and the brakes inspire confidence. All mileage has been covered using Tetra Ethyl Lead additive (Tetraboost). A comprehensive history file accompanies the car, including detailed maintenance records and cam profile plots. Notably, the car retains its original London registration number.
In summary, this is a very well-sorted and highly usable example of one of Riley’s most attractive and enduring sporting models.
