The Appeal
Triumph’s unusually-named ‘Southern Cross’ evolved the boxy Super 9 saloon into something altogether more svelte and sporting. It was appropriate, because beneath the bonnet was the potent new Coventry Climax 1L engine.
Just 3,500 of all Super 9 variants were built, which makes these sports tourers much rarer than their Abingdon rivals. More practical too, thanks to a larger body and space for an admittedly nominal four people.
This 1932 Southern Cross is a particularly appealing example. It looks resplendent in white with its black wires and red cabin. The vendor acquired it in 2015 from a Scottish collection and tells us that he and the previous keeper have looked after it well and invested heavily in the condition and mechanics.
The car is in very good condition, with a hint of patina to add an extra dose of character. It comes to market with a thick history file that usefully includes various factory manuals, workshop manuals and a parts catalogue. It would make a great weekend tourer or has clever potential as an entertaining hillclimb car.
The vendor says:
“This little car is made for country lanes. It handles well and is quite sporty. It also has hydraulic brakes, which Triumph, Wolseley and Morris fitted to their cars in the early 1930s.”
Starts easily and the engine runs fine according to seller
Not driven in 2025 but started regularly
Ran well when put away at the end of last year we are told
Equipped with hydraulic brakes,
No reported running or driving issues except as noted above
