The Appeal

The Appia, Lancia’s conservatively styled three box family saloon, was one of the firm’s most innovative. It was also the last in a long line of the firm’s models to use the innovative sliding pillar front suspension, first introduced on the 1922 Lambda.

The car also featured pillarless side doors and Lancia’s smooth V4 1,089cc engine. The Appia evolved through three series, the final version from 1959 gaining a more modern front end, more power and better brakes but otherwise being identical to its predecessors.

This 1960 Series 3 is in fantastic condition, smartly presented in metallic blue with well preserved refurbished grey interior. It has been sympathetically maintained and restored by its four owners, most recently including a mechanical overhaul. It is a very unprepossessing, usable, four seater classic for shows or friends and family getaways.

The History and Paperwork

ASI registration and certificate shows that this is a 1960 car
VIN records confirm it is a factory LHD model

The Interior

We are told that the interior was restored eight years ago and everything works
Interior appears factory correct with gentle patina of age
Grey vinyl bench seats in aged but undamaged condition
Grey carpets with rubber protective over mats
Original dashboard with vinyl insert showing no damage
Lancia decal in centre of dashboard is factory correct but sun faded
Period correct radio
Stylish Lancia black plastic two-spoke steering wheel
Wheel centre boss has a crack across the logo
Dials show sun fading to the plastic covers and pitting to the chrome trims
Seatbelts fitted in the front
Boot area is very smart with clean trim
Matching spare wheel and jack in the boot
Headlining appears to be original and in good, unmarked and undamaged condition
Door cards in good condition although fixings appear not to be factory correct

The Exterior

Smart dark blue metallic paintwork with no visible marks or deterioration
The bodywork has been restored and there is a slight colour difference between the top and bottom of the car
We are told that the car has never been in an accident
The panels including boot, bonnet and doors all open and close correctly as they should
Some corrosion on scuttle beneath windscreen
Treated with anti-rust inhibitor underneath
Chrome and brightwork appears to be original and very presentable
Detail touches like the fluted tail pipe
Lancia hub caps in excellent condition
Small area of damage to chrome bumper on the driver’s side rear corner
Boot floor in good condition with no visible corrosion
Sills, arches and bases of doors in excellent condition
Fitted with Toyo tyres

The Mechanics

1,089cc Lancia V4 engine

4spd manual gearbox
Series 3 cars got improved brakes and increased power
Comprehensive mechanical overhaul of engine, brakes and transmission system last Spring
Has covered just 500kms since the work was completed
Non-standard red painted cam covers and air filter but this can easily be returned to black

Summary

The Appia exhibited Lancia’s remarkable ability to find innovative solutions to everyday motoring questions. From the clever front suspension to the V4 engine and the pillarless design, this conservatively styled four seater would have stood out amongst its competitors when new.

This nicely preserved Series 3 Appia shows why the Lancia name remains so revered by enthusiasts. With significant recent mechanical work it looks like a well cared for, very usable example of a car that is both rewarding and entertaining to own.
