THE APPEAL

The Gilbern Invader is a classic British sports car that was produced by the Welsh company Gilbern Cars between 1969 and 1973. It is one of the last models produced by the company before it went into liquidation. The Gilbern Invader was based on the earlier Gilbern Genie model and it featured various updates and improvements - The one we have here is a Mk 2 Invader 
One of the unique aspects of the Gilbern cars was their construction. Gilbern used a hybrid construction method, which involved a tubular steel chassis combined with a fibreglass body. The approach aimed to provide a lightweight yet rigid structure. 
The Invader, such as this example, was offered with a range of engines, including the 3.1 Essex V6 that was sourced from the Ford.
 

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • First registered in 1971.
  • Fully restored in the late 1990's but never collected by its then owner
  • V5 present.
  • Only 49,439 miles on the speedometer.
  • Barn stored since restoration 
  • One keeper owned the vehicle for 27 years.
  • The current owner is very sad to let this one go, but their other Gilbern needs work and there are only so many hours in the day of course!

THE INTERIOR

  • Original condition interior. 
  • Full vinyl interior.
  • Well presented interior with minimal to no signs of ageing, although she does smell a little "antique".
  • Leather dashboard and the dials placed within look excellent, with the chrome surrounds showing very well. 
  • Three spoke sports leather steering wheel presents well.
  • All the gauges, switches and electronics within the vehicle are said to be working as they should and look fantastic for their age.
  • The gearstick and surround is looking well too, with little signs of wear.
  • Excellent condition door cards, dash board and headlining with no marks or damage that we noted.
  • Carpet located within the car is in nice condition. We noticed that the passenger side floor mat was showing signs of wearing.
  • The front seats are in good condition with both sets showing minimal wear to any of the bolsters. There are some imperfections to note on the driver’s seat but none that we saw on the passenger seat. 
  • There are signs of corrosion to note in some places inside the vehicle, but this is purely cosmetic. 

THE EXTERIOR

  • Great condition paintwork from a few feet away.
  • On close inspection the overall presentation of the bodywork is good; there are however some cracks and blemishes to the paint but a lot less than we’d expect for a car of this age and overall it presents really nicely. There is a blemish to the passenger side door that would require attention. 
  • The body panels look nice and straight with no signs of damage or corrosion. 
  • The alloy wheels are looking tatty and they could benefit from a refurb to really bring them back to life. 
  • The glass and sills are in overall good condition with a little delimitation at the edges but are holding up well considering the age of the vehicle. The rear screen has been sourced from another car at some point in time and is etched
  • All lights are presenting well. The lenses are clear and free from fading. 


THE MECHANICS

  • The Invader has been laid up for many years but has recently undergone engine recommissioning so starts and runs sweetly, with no reported mechanical issues noted. 
  • 3.1 litre Ford Essex V6 engine that really sounds fantastic. 
  • The brakes will need thorough checks before being driven on the road again as they make little effort
  • One of the twin fuel tanks leaks, currently running from a can in the boot
  • Four speed manual gearbox with overdrive present (OD not tested)
  • Stainless steel exhaust system. 
  • Koni adjustable coilover suspension fitted but is likely to need some replacements due to time standing
  • 148BHP produced by the infamous 3.1 V6 engine.
  • True analogue driving experience. 


SUMMARY

The Gilbern Invader is a noteworthy British sports car known for its unique design, hybrid construction and blend of performance and luxury, with this particular example is a real eye full in its stunning red livery. The choice is yours as too wether to simply complete the road recommissioning work and enjoy the rest of the summer turning heads as you go by, or go the hole hog and have yourself a show winner - Whatever you decide, it will be a pleasure to own and drive we are sure.
