Styled by legendary designer Giorgetto Giugiaro when he was only 19 years old as the definition of a young man’s sports coupé, the Alfa Romeo GT junior became one of the most desirable cars of the late Sixties and early Seventies and is adored by collectors today.
The original ‘Tipo 105’ came with a 1,290cc version of the legendary Alfa Twin Cam engine, which was astonishingly lively for its capacity and delivered impressive levels of performance, accompanied by a fantastic soundtrack. Larger engines were offered later, but in the eyes of many the 1300 – produced to get around Italian tax laws, thus giving us one of the liveliest small capacity engines ever made – was the star of the show.
This example is a post-facelift 1300 GT with the later style flatter bonnet, freshly imported from South Africa where it has recently been restored to original condition.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
Freshly imported from South Africa, previously from dry Johannesburg region
Restored in 2022
Tax, MOT and ULEZ exempt
The seller has completed all of the import and duty paperwork relative to the car so there are no additional taxes to pay, while the DVLA NOVA notification and original South African registration document are included.
Vendor is also happy to help the buyer register the car in the UK if that’s where it remains after it is sold - the process is very simple and costs less than £100 to complete.
THE INTERIOR
Smart black leatherette seats
Delightful thee-spoke steering wheel
New carpets
Original tool kit
The black leatherette seats have been retrimmed and are in excellent condition, while the rest of the cabin is in fine order, with a gorgeous aftermarket three-spoke leather-rimmed sports steering wheel. There’s also a period Pioneer radio-cassette, which was presumably fitted to the car in the late 1970s.
The door cards and headlining are in exceptional condition, as is the inside of the boot (which still contains the original tool kit), while the car benefits from new carpets throughout.
THE EXTERIOR
Smart white paint
Appears very good underneath
All original chrome
Refurbished steel sports wheels
There’s a lot to love about the bodywork of this Alfa on top of its sensational styling. It’s presented in great order, with gleaming white paint, immaculate refurbished steel sports wheels and good tyres all-round.
It was repainted last year and looks stunning, but potential bidders should note that some micro-blisters have formed under the paint – most likely as a result of being kept in a hot, airless shipping container – and while they’re not immediately obvious the new buyer may want to get them rectified later on. It would certainly be worth doing, as the car is in stunning order otherwise.
The chrome is all in good order and the car looks to be solid underneath, with evidence of being wax-protected.
THE MECHANICS
1,290cc Alfa Twin-Cam
Five-speed manual box
Freshly serviced
Drives really well
Under the bonnet you’ll find Alfa’s familiar (and lovely) 1,290cc Twin-Cam engine, which fires up on the button and has a characteristic chatter to it.
It performs really well – we were able to test drive the car over a short route and can confirm that it accelerates well and that the engine runs very smoothly indeed, emitting very little smoke and holding a steady temperature.
The brakes, steering and suspension all feel great, all five gears engage as they should, as does reverse, and the clutch bite feels just right.
SUMMARY
This is a lovely and characterful example of what must be one of the prettiest cars ever made, presented in very good overall condition and in excellent running order.
GT Juniors are getting increasingly collectable, and with very good reason. This one’s a very smart example of the GT Junior is its purest 1300 form, and one that would suit an Alfa collector down to the ground.
