The Appeal
Mercedes-Benz had found impressive sporting success with the R107, and were now setting their sights on the next machine to take on the touring circuit - all eyes fell upon the rock-solid, infamously over-engineered W201. As the competition heated up from the likes of Audi, they took it upon themselves to touch base with the legendary Cosworth workshops, who began refining the car into a true thoroughbred.
Taking the much-loved M102 engine, Cosworth cast a new lightweight engine head that could accommodate 16 valves - the "largest that could practically be fitted into the combustion chamber". The roadgoing car was a little more practical, sure, but still offered a big power band and plenty of torque - a driver's car through and through.
This particular 1988 example stands out as a solid and highly original car with a comprehensive history, making it increasingly desirable as these performance icons become harder to find in unmodified condition. After a little bit of project work, we expect this will be a remarkable addition to your fleet.
