The Appeal
Here is a wonderful piece of history. It is one of the scout bikes used on the 2023 Sand Raiders rally. For those not in the know, the event recreates the 1980s’ Paris Dakar races. This bike’s leading role means that it also features on 'Harry’s Garage' Sand Raiders 2023 media.
It is perhaps no surprise that it was chosen to do this because Yamaha’s XT600 is one of the best trials bikes of the last 40 years. Simple, straightforward, reliable and utterly capable, it naturally completed the long-distance event without fault.
That it did so was no doubt in part due to some extensive recent maintenance. It was sourced from Greece - where it enjoyed a dry climate of course - and imported to the UK in 2021. It was fully prepared for the event as a replica of a 1986 Chesterfield Belgarda team bike . Alongside the cosmetics, this work included a service, clutch, chains, sprockets, back wheel, callipers, front disc and battery at the cost of £2,000.
Following the race, in December 2023, further work included respraying the tank, a service and a general checkover. When the current keeper bought this bike earlier this year it was serviced and checked over again by Motorcycle Centre, Carlisle.
So it is clearly in very good mechanical order. Thankfully the proof of its fascinating recent life has been retained, including decals and signs of use which you can inspect in the photographs. The result is a mechanically sorted bike that tells a story.
The buyer gets a brilliant off-road bike with a fascinating history. It is ready to use too, thanks to all that recent work and a long MOT to August 2025.
