1998 Peugeot 106 Rallye (Series 2)

Video at the bottom of the listing

Highlights

  • Lightweight homologation special
  • Series 2 car with 1.6-litre four-cylinder
  • Five-speed manual transmission
  • Sought after and collectible hot hatch
  • Italian registration documents

The Appeal

Following the success of the Series 1 106 Rallye, with its perky 1.3-litre engine, low kerb weight and sparkling handling, it was inevitable that Peugeot would try and recapture that magic when the 106 was face-lifted for the Series 2 car. And so it was that the Series 2 car became the basis for another limited run, homologation special ‘Rallye’ edition.
This time, however, a 1.6-litre engine was fitted, along with improved brakes and suspension from the GTI model. With a similar approach to weight-saving and simplicity as the first car, the result was a 103bhp hot hatch that tipped the scales at just 865Kg and offered handling that is best described as “telepathic”. Superb steering feel and agility on par with a housemartin have made it a firm favourite amongst those who treasure driving feel above all else.
This example is finished in the classic Bianca White colour scheme and is presented in very original condition, with no modifications. If you’ve been on the lookout for a fun little hot hatch with sparkling responses and a legendary reputation for squeezing every drop of fun from every drive, then this could well be the car for you.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in 1998
  • Complete with Italian registration documents
  • Desirable Series 2 facelift model
  • 129,885Km on the clock
  • The vendor believes that fewer than 4,300 Series 2 Rallye models were made
  • Sadly, we don’t know much about the history of this vehicle

The Interior

  • Original grey fabric upholstery with red, yellow and blue accents to the seats and door cards
  • The upholstery all appears to be in good order, with some light wear to the front seats and some slightly heavier wear to the bolsters of the driver’s seat
  • Smart royal blue carpet shows well, with no damage or staining we could see, it is complemented with a set of black rubber over-mats
  • The light coloured headlining appears to be intact and taut, with no signs of sagging or damage we could discern
  • Overall, the switchgear and instruments present well, with only the lightest evidence of use and age, with a little more wear to the top of the gear shifter
  • The boot is in good condition, with a black vinyl floor liner
  • Underneath the liner, the boot floor looks very straight and clean, with no damage we could identify and no signs of corrosion

The Exterior

  • Bianca White paintwork with the correct yellow, blue and red ‘Rallye’ graphics
  • The paintwork all presents nicely, with no significant marks or blemishes apparent
  • As far as we could see, the body work looks straight and neat, with even panel gaps and shut lines and no obvious evidence of corrosion
  • The glass elements, light lenses and other items of external trim all appear to be present and correct, with no cracking, chipping or warping on show
  • We love the subtle but muscular bodykit, which neatly accentuates the 106’s handsome lines and proportions, and shows no signs of damage or poor fitment
  • Wheels are the correct, 14-inch, white-painted Michelin steel items, fitted with what appears to be a good set of tyres
  • Underneath the car looks to be clean and solid, with no serious corrosion or damage we could see

The Mechanics

  • 1,587cc, eight-valve, naturally aspirated four-cylinder
  • Five-speed manual transmission
  • Front-wheel drive
  • Suspension from the 106 GTI (factory fitted)
  • Disc brakes all round
  • Rated by the manufacturer at 103bhp and 97lb-ft, with a weight of just 865Kg
  • Factory performance figures: 0-100Km/h in 8.8 seconds, 195Km/h top speed
  • The engine bay looks nice and clean, with some spots of corrosion evident on the rocker cover and manifold shield
  • No faults or issues are reported by the vendor, and they tell us that the car has just been serviced

Summary

A lively and pugnacious little hot hatch, offering spritely handling and a revvy, perky powertrain. These fun little homologation specials are increasingly difficult to find in unmodified condition, so make sure you don’t let this one slip the net.
