The Appeal

We love a sleeper at Car & Classic. And they don’t get much, well, sleepier, than this remarkable MX5 Mk2. Miss the photos of the engine bay and you’ll assume you’re looking at a standard 2004 Euphonic in Velocity Red. 
You aren't. This car was treated to a turn-key Rocketeer conversion in May 2024. If that name’s new to you, let us provide some enlightenment: Rocketeer engineered the ‘MXV6,’ a careful evolution of Mazda’s two-seater featuring a 285bhp 3L V6 Jaguar engine.

"It’s got the power where you want it, a lovely tuneful engine and sweet gearbox. It’s not flawless, but look at it as a bit of weekend fun and ask yourself what would give you more fun for under £15,000? It’s not the only answer out there (Lotus Elise and E46 M3 are two that spring to mind), but ask yourself if an MX-5 was ever on your wishlist before you found out you could have one with the power to weight ratio of a current Porsche 718 Boxster S."

Unless you open the bonnet, you’d be hard-pressed to know just how potent this Mazda is. The twin tailpipes are a bit of a giveaway, but otherwise it runs stock aesthetics. The work was done by Rocketeer with the engine - a brand new OEM unit - reported to only have 1,000 miles on it.
The car is in good useable condition with a few areas to note in photos. It comes to market with MOT to May 2025 and is reported to be ready to use and enjoy.

The Condition

  • Mk2 MX5 in Velocity Red with paintwork in fair condition for age
  • Paintwork shows some areas of fade such as on boot lid
  • There are some scratches, stone chips and other marks to note in photos 
  • Passenger wing has minor scratches and dents
  • Signs of rust in the sills and arches which vendor reports to be minor
  • Dents and scratches on passenger side front and rear wings
  • Factory hard top in matching Velocity Red 
  • Minor damage on the corner and edges of the hard top
  • Black fabric roof in fair condition with some aging as shown 
  • Underside in good order in photos with no structural advisories on last MOT
  • Rust prevention in chassis components done in 2019
  • Fitted with grey anodised multi spoke 16in factory alloy wheels in fair condition 
  • Quality Goodyear Eagle tyres fitted all round showing fair condition and decent remaining tread
  • Two-tone Euphonic red and black leather interior in fair condition 
  • Seats present well for age and mileage with some bolster wear to note 
  • Plastic trim in the middle of the centre console has been spray-painted red
  • There are some blemishes to note to interior as shown in photos 
  • Vendor reports that there is a broken spring on rearmost cup holder
  • Supplied with space saver spare wheel as shown 
  • Advisories for headlights on MOT with other lights appearing well kept
