The Appeal
Land Rovers are like big Meccano kits. All you need is a bag of spanners and a free afternoon to take one to pieces and rebuild it to suit your purposes. This 1964 Series IIA has been restored with several enhancements from later Series Land Rovers in order to enhance its usability.
The first thing keen rivet counters will notice is the much-improved outboard headlamps. This example has been modified to resemble late Series IIAs, rather than the Series II, by using the ‘Maltese Cross’ steel mesh grille. The wings are, however, hung on a Series III bulkhead, which features a corresponding Series III padded dashboard - a notable design improvement in its day. We’re informed that this also allows for Series III brakes.
As the photographs attest, this Land Rover is a presentable and highly usable example of the marque. Desirable features include free-wheeling hubs and overdrive, both of which are useful on the road. It’s MOT/road tax exempt and ready to go.
