The Appeal
If you want a characterful camper, you want a Volkswagen Splittie. Nothing else quite comes close. And when you buy one, it’s all about the looks, maintenance and condition of the interior.
This stylish ‘65 mixes mint green and white paintwork with a very well kept cream interior. It is from the ‘factory standard’ end of the cosmetic Splittie spectrum, sporting domed chrome hub caps on whitewalls and neat interior features like a Bakelite cream factory wheel. It is versatile too, thanks to its double ‘barn door’ layout. Inside there is a well laid out camping cabin with sink and table and upgraded 12V electrics throughout.
Originally a Swedish market van, it arrived in the UK in 2010 and with the current keeper a couple of years ago. In recent years maintenance has included replacing the anti roll bar mounts, servicing, new bulbs, gaskets and seals, a battery and attention to the electrics. It was serviced and the electrics checked by a specialist in 2024.
This is a good, honest and very presentable example of the perennial Type 2. It is proof of its condition and reliability that the current keeper recently drove it from Yorkshire to the West of Ireland and back without issue.
