The Appeal

The second (and much improved) iteration of the E-Type came along in 1968, and to many enthusiasts, it's this short-lived and rare “Series 2” that represents a sweet spot in the range. While the stunning looks of the original thankfully changed little, the engine capacity grew to 4.2 litres, cooling was improved and several other small tweaks were made - both to meet stringent US market requirements and enhance everyday usability.

This 1971 ‘Fixed Head Coupé’ is in very good condition while remaining highly usable. £1,776 has recently been spent ensuring that it runs and drives exactly as it should, while a wealth of older invoices shows this car has been doted upon for decades. It sports an attractive age-commensurate patina to its British Racing Green paintwork while remaining in very sound order throughout.

The FHC variant boasts prettier lines than 2+2 models, while this example further benefits from a period Tudor-Webasto sunroof allowing you to enjoy the open air practically to the same extent as a Roadster. The vendor confirms that is matching numbers and was supplied new to the UK in right-hand drive.

Having undergone some bodywork restoration and a bare metal respray during the mid-1990s, this Jaguar has solid bones. The paintwork and trim have since accrued a light patina as befits a car of this vintage. All continues to present beautifully inside and we understand all the cabin electrics, instruments and controls to be in good order.

The Series 2 was the last E-Type to feature the brilliant XK DOHC straight-six. Make no mistake, the V12 fitted to its successor was a magnificent engine in its own right, but for those seeking the quintessential E-Type experience, the six-cylinder cars are the ones to go for. This car of course features the 4.2-litre version, which in European trim is fed by a trio of SU carburettors while power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox. The vendor informs us that the Jaguar drives very well following the recent work and we’re not informed of any apparent faults or untoward noises.
