The Appeal

For many, this is the ultimate Beetle.

To kick things off, this is a 1303s - the most highly specced version of the range-topping 'Super Beetle' model. On top of the usual MacPherson Strut front suspension fitted to all Super Beetles, '03s' featured the curved windscreen and padded dash, while the letter 'S' signifies front disc brakes and the largest engine - the 1600 'Twin-Port'. If that wasn't special enough, this car is also a genuine Karmann Cabriolet, a coachbuilt convertible built in period by Karmann of Osnabrück.

A special car indeed, and it doesn't stop there...

This Beetle was ordered new in Germany by a member of the British Armed Forces who was stationed there at the time. He specced his Beetle in right-hand drive, naturally, and brought it back to the UK in 1979. At that time, a vehicle would go on the latest registration letter rather than being backdated, hence the 'V' Registration on a 1977 car.

The VW has only had four previous keepers from new, the last owner keeping the car for 27 years. In 2001, it was restored, with much of the work performed by air-cooled VW specialist Riverhaus. It was at this time that the genuine Porsche Fuchs alloy wheels were fitted. Since then, the car has barely turned a wheel, covering just 1,400 miles in 24 years! Recently recommissioned with a thorough service, this MOT-exempt, tax-exempt and ULEZ-compliant classic has everything in its favour.
