The Appeal

Isn't it funny how Britain, in spite of its mostly awful weather, became the go-to nation for convertible sports cars. Well, someone at MG obviously clocked this, and so began the transformation of the the open MGB into an elegant, Italianate coupé - the MGB GT. Released in 1965 and enduring until 1980, the GT was a huge success, with its Pininfarina-penned 'greenhouse' and practical hatchback boot. Powered by the venerable B Series engine, the GT was capable of a top speed of around 105 mph and it remains to this day one of the most popular British classic sports-cars being fun to drive and easy to work on and live with.

Here we have a remarkably original late "rubber bumper" example which has been in the care of the same keeper - who is the vendor, from day one in 1978!

Upon delivery, the seller had the car Ziebarted immediately. Between 1978 and 1983, they used the MGB as their main car, taking it to the office on many weekdays and using it for leisure as well, for example, two winter sports holidays in Switzerland in 1979 and 1980.

By 1987, the seller had three children, and it became necessary for him to buy a “sensible family car”, which he did in August 1987. The MGB thereafter became the leisure car, used some weekends but when not in use, stored dryly and securely in a garage.

The car has been garaged from the day of its arrival in 1978; it has been very well maintained and regularly serviced, much of which is documented.

Now, the time has finally come for someone new to enjoy this cherished car and ensure its preservation for another half-century to come.

The Condition

• The vendor tells us the bodywork and paint are all original
• Whilst there is some blistering of paint and a few scratches and chips, and some indications of corrosion recorded during MOT, the MG presents fairly for a car of this age
• Some repairs to the sills visible in the photographs
• The vendor confirms the car has not been involved in any accident: the car sits straight and true with good shut-lines all round
• The trim looks remarkably good for its age and has certainly benefited from being garaged all its life
• The original Rostyle wheels and wheel nuts show some surface rust corrosion
• Presentable and highly original interior
• No obvious modifications, additions or notable wear to the cabin

The Mechanics

• 1.8-litre B Series inline-four
• Four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive
• We're informed that the gauges and switches all work, as does the overdrive button for third and fourth gears
• Original-looking engine compartment
• MOT passed, despite exemption
• The car has had its two most recent major services in 2018 and 2020 (since when the car has done very little mileage)
• In 2018, the oil, filters and spark plugs were all replaced and a new battery, horn and alternator belt were also fitted
• In 2020, a new fuel tank was fitted along with new fuel pipes and a new fuel gauge; a new rear bumper and mud-flaps were also fitted
• The invoices for these two services are with the car’s papers
• The car has been serviced by the same mechanic since the 1990s; it has been serviced almost on each occasion the car has been MOT tested
• The car is reported to start willingly every time and drives very nicely with no issues
