The Appeal

The R107 remains a popular member of the classic car landscape, and it’s easy to see why: they were generally very well engineered and exuded class and good taste when new. They are icons of the 1970s and ‘80s, with their smart styling and excellent performance.

This particular 300 SL looks to be in very good condition throughout, with very nice Almandine Red Metallic paint and grey leather interior both in excellent condition throughout.

Mercedes SLs of this era are now very practical cars, which have aged well and now have their own retro appeal. And traditional Mercedes over-engineering was still in full swing when these cars were produced, making them a great choice of classic car today.

The interior trim department at Mercedes-Benz in the late 1980s surely deserve an award for producing some of the most hard wearing soft furnishings in the known universe. The grey leather front and rear seats in this Mercedes appear to be in almost new condition, with only the lightest of creasing evident. Additionally, the seats remain supportive and comfortable, with almost no wear to be seen on the driver’s seat bolster.

Walnut veneer trims the centre console and appears on the dashboard, and remains in good condition, with no signs of lacquer peel or delamination that we could see. A modern Pioneer radio/CD player has been fitted and the rest of the dashboard plastics appear to be very well preserved. The instrument cluster is well stocked with a full complement of gauges, keeping the driver informed of the car’s condition.

Grey carpet runs throughout and is clean and tidy, with overmats in similarly good condition. The door cards are unmarked and feature useful storage bins, while the window winders are electric. There is seating in the rear of occasional use, which can also be folded down to provide extra luggage space.

The classic shape of the R107 looks great in this shade of ‘Almandine’ red metallic paint with no indications of rust. The paint itself is very well preserved, with minor blemishes to be found on each rear quarter panel and on the drivers door. There are also light scratches above the drivers door handle as can be seen in the photos. Bodywork beneath it appears to be straight and true. Bright chrome covers the front grille, wing mirrors and window surrounds, as well as the rubber-trimmed bumpers, and it looks to retain a good shine.

A black canvas hood provides weather protection. It is very clean and the rear windows are free from clouding. The wing mirrors are heated which will help on a cold morning and the lamp lenses appear to be clear and bright.

This Mercedes sits on alloy wheels, which are in good shape, although there is a little scuffing to their rims. The tyres feature a thick sidewall, which makes for a very comfortable ride. Underneath, the car is well preserved as a result of wax oil treatment.

The engine bay appears to be in tidy condition and the running gear looks well cared for underneath. The MOT history shows that this SL has been driven less than 200 miles in the past five years, so it has clearly led a sedate life of late.

Mercedes of this vintage are generally thought to be very well engineered, with this straight-six engine being capable of very high mileages, if well cared for. So with an odometer showing just 51,000 miles, this car should have plenty of life in it yet.
