The Appeal
The big, chiselled XM was one of the last of a particular type of Citroen. Inheriting the firm’s big saloon mantle from the CX and evolving the design of Gandini’s ‘origami’ BX, the XM looked like none of its competitors and rode and drove quite unlike them, too.
The estate, like its ‘Familiale’ predecessor, offered cavernous load-lugging capacity of the sort that would appeal to antiques dealers with their big clocks or parents with their big families. Sales in RHD were never high, making this low-mileage survivor quite the find for enthusiasts of quirky, esoteric modern classics.
The car is a petrol XU10-engined 2L with Si trim finished in dark blue. Enthusiasts will note it is a ‘Series 1.5,’ so it benefits from the multiple changes, including the much-improved Hydractive suspension system, which offers a smoother ride.
It has covered less than 66,000 miles from new in the hands of just seven keepers. The state of preservation for such a functional, family car is impressive: the comfy grey velour interior looks especially appealing. It is very original too, including the aerodynamic wheel covers and Citroen radio cassette system.
With its LPG conversion, this versatile, practical classic could easily work as a daily or maybe for a continental touring holiday this summer. The MOT has expired, but the last test was less than 500 miles ago and contained no advisories.
However you choose to preserve this Gallic land yacht, we’re sure it will be both rewarding and enjoyable.
