The Appeal
Morgan’s 4/4 remained in production for over 80 years yet demand never wavered. When the first keeper of this 2001 example put down his deposit in 1997 he had to wait five years for delivery.
You can see why. The later 4/4s mix classic sports car lines with modern mechanicals from Ford’s 120bhp 1.8L Zetec engine to give buyers something quite distinct in the market. Aluminium bodywork, stainless steel bulkhead and galvanised chassis mean that it looks like a classic, but will last much longer.
This car, known as ‘Molly,’ is that most appealing of 4/4 Zetecs - an easy-access ‘long door’ car that has covered only 8,000 miles in its 24 years. Despite the sparing use it has been annually serviced - always at the same time each year - and its smart dark blue paintwork and beige leather cabin are in remarkable timewarp condition.
There can’t be many opportunities to buy a 4/4 Zetec with this combination of specification and sparing use. It is only for sale due to the seller’s loss of storage space and carries the reassurance of advisory-free MOT to June 2025. It even comes with a plate that neatly nods to those convenient long doors - ‘Easi Mog.’
The vendor writes:
“Molly is a joy to drive... road tests of this Zetec engine 4/4 describe it as offering the optimum power to weight for a road going sports car.
“We bought Molly in 2021 because we were both such great fans of the Morgan marque. Having owned classic cars in the past and experienced some of the frustrations and expense of keeping them on the road, I wanted something that had all the appeal of a traditional coach built body but with modern running gear and engine. EA51 MOG fits the bill precisely and we have had three happy years of motoring on dry, sunny days. Having retired, the only reason we are selling is to prepare for a move to a smaller property which will not have garage space for a third car. The only addition and modifications I have made to the car is to have a tailored, half tonneau in blue moleskin made by Allon White - I love driving without side screens and hood. The half tonneau really suits the look of bodywork in "roadster" mode. I replaced the Motorola steering wheel with a period correct, larger diameter wheel to facilitate easier parking. I also had fitted two, hood-tension pivot brackets to make it easier to put up the hood. The hood is still as new and has been so rarely used, it is a very tight fit.”
