The Appeal
If you're more familiar with the Mulliner name from high-end Bentleys with diamond quilted leather, here's an introduction to a more esoteric and far rarer part of the coachbuilder's story. From 1928 the Bordesley Green, Birmingham firm offered specially built variants of local firm Austin's tiny Seven, often with pretty fabric bodies.
For buyers of the time, these cars were a chance to add a dose of luxury and stand out from the crowd. Total numbers built are unknown, but indications are that remaining numbers worldwide barely hit two digits. All of which makes this rather lovely March 1928 car a magnificent find for pre-war vintage enthusiasts.
That it is in such good order is key to its appeal, because renovating one of these cars to this standard would be tricky. As you can see in the photos, it looks gorgeous in dark red, mixing areas of paintwork with fabric finish to most of the body. The cream wire wheels are a neat styling touch. Inside there is a lovely fabric four-seat cabin that would have been luxurious by contemporary standards.
We're told that the car was the vendor's father's pride and joy. That much is evident from the photos. It is said to run and drive well and benefits from a useful magneto conversion to improve reliability. The Seven is a perennial favorite of the classic world - this special version is on another level.image.png1.08 MB
