The Appeal
Inspired after touring Europe in a supercharged Volkswagen Cabriolet, the Porsche 356 Pre-A is the purest expression of Ferdinand Porsche's original vision. The 1500 S variant stands as one of the most desirable iterations of the early 356 lineage. With its uprated engine and enhanced performance credentials, the 1500 S has long been sought after by collectors who appreciate the model's racing pedigree.
Our example presents a compelling opportunity for the discerning 356 enthusiast. Originally delivered through France Sonauto and benefiting from just two former registered keepers in its long life, the car has been thoughtfully preserved with an impressive ninety per cent of its components reportedly being original period pieces. The approach taken during its restoration, which began in the 1980s, has been one of sympathetic conservation rather than over-restoration: bumper trims, lights, handles and window surrounds have been deliberately kept in their original state, whilst the bodywork was completely stripped to reveal original opening panels with stamped numbers intact.
The interior has been comprehensively refurbished to original specification by a 356 upholstery specialist using period-correct materials, whilst the original metallic blue paintwork has been refinished with a satin clear coat chosen specifically to reproduce the period finish.
The car benefits from French Carte Grise de Collection registration and comes with a vehicle safety inspection valid until November 2030. Whilst the engine was replaced by a previous owner with a VW unit, a new engine conforming to original specification is available as an extra, offering the next custodian the opportunity to return the car to full period-correct status.
For collectors seeking an early 356 with documented history, thoughtful restoration and genuine period character, this 1500 S warrants serious consideration.IMG_0359 monnet.JPG3.44 MB

At the time this car's restoration began, back in the 1980s, the usual approach was to make them as shiny as possible, often at the cost of originality. That's where this 356 bucked the trend, undergoing a restoration much more like the sort of work restorers carry out today. Everything that could be saved has been, resulting in a tantalisingly original car that retains a period-correct appearance. As the photographs attest, this Porsche sports a delightful patina, while a layer of protective resin and Blaxon to the underside have reportedly maintained its condition.

As-is, we're informed that the 356 drives very well, ready to meet its next custodian.
