When the Mini took off as a pop-culture icon, the pipe-smoking bods at BMC scrambled to capitalise upon it. The austere little car was beginning to get picked up by celebrities, executives, and the well-to-do, who may have been a little disappointed to find that the country's most iconic, fashionable little motor had very little in the way of creature comforts.
The Super Deluxe was the answer they came up with. Handsomely trimmed with more colourful, comfortable upholstery, it was still far from the standards of Rolls-Royce, but made it perfect for a whole new audience of drivers eager to give the Issigonis masterpiece a go.
