The Appeal
Jaguar's original 3.8L Mk2 set the template for the post-war sporting sedan - as quick as an E-Type yet far more practical, it's no surprise that this model remains so popular over 60 years on from their introduction.
This very smart Carmen Red 3.8 has led a very interesting life. It was the 25th RHD 240 to be built following the model's introduction in 1967, and we're told that the history file indicates that it was sent to 'Noddy' Coombs' Guildford works to receive some of his legendary upgrades. In the late 1980s, that process went considerably further when an extended program began to deliver the Coombs replica you see in the photos. The work included a switch to a 3.8L XK engine, which was mated to the factory-fitted 4-speed manual overdrive gearbox. Repainted in stand-out red with a retrimmed cream interior, it now also sports thin rear Coombs spats to house the smart chrome wires.
The vendor tells us that he acquired the car in 2021, initially registering it to a friend whilst he lived abroad. Since purchase, we're told that he has invested heavily in the car. The history file is extensive and includes a $4,100 bill for carburetor and fuel system work in 2023. Buyers benefit from a useful recent March 2023 MOT, which contained no advisories. The car has covered barely 300 miles since.
