The Appeal
When a company that has never made cars decides to make cars, often it results in proper blue-sky thinking. That is especially so when that company is Saab and when the project is led by an engineer like Sixten Sason. His aerodynamic 92 was the genesis of this car, the 96, built 25 years later, using essentially the same design and ideas.
The 96 got the more durable and reliable Ford 1.5L V4, an engine that did away with the earlier two-strokes need for fussy oil and fuel mixing. It’s more economical too, which makes a V4 a good choice for enthusiasts who enjoy quirk and difference, but also driving too.
This pretty Verona Green 96 is in really good order, thank to work by a former director of Veloce Publishing. In recent years it has been entrusted to the workshop at Haynes Motor Museum and benefits from a new alternator and overhauled ignition system.
If the recent glowing feature on these cars in Classic & Sportscar has whetted your appetite, or you just like classics that are clever and different, then this well-kept example will be tempting.
