The Appeal

Flat track racing is not for the faint of heart. Hurtling around a dirt oval at well over a hundred miles an hour is a dangerous and highly skilled business. It takes a special sort of rider to do it, and it also takes a very special machine; motorcycles that can sustain flat-out running over rough terrain.

We’re delighted to offer this rare and beautifully prepared 1975 Champion Yamaha Flat Track Racer, frame number 40673. Following extensive restoration work, the Yamaha boasts an incredible specification and has won ‘Best in Show’ at a Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club event in August 2012. Better still, the bike is UK road-registered with an age-related plate.

The vendor provides the following:

“Champion frame kits were produced in Hayward, California, from 1968 to 1976 by Doug Schwerma. A machine of this type was famously ridden by Kenny Roberts Sr. during his 1973 and 1974 US Grand National title wins. This particular bike has been meticulously prepared to resemble and pay tribute to the legendary Yamaha TZ750 flat tracker that Roberts rode to victory at the 1975 Indy Mile—a race so spectacular that the bike was subsequently banned for being too fast. Finished in Roberts’ iconic colors, it retains authenticity with many components sourced directly from California. This is one of only two known Champion Yamaha 750 flat trackers in the UK, making it a rare and fitting homage to one of flat track racing’s most unforgettable moments.”
