The Appeal
This 48-year-old Volvo 242 is proof positive of the sheer unburstable nature of these sturdy saloons. Despite covering nearly 340,000 kms it looks like it rolled out of the Torslanda Works in Gothenburg very recently.
It is a USA specification car that appears to have originated in Virginia. That means it is fitted with the fuel-injected 104bhp version of the reliable B21F 4cyl engine. It is also fitted with the relaxing 3-speed auto box. Inside and out, it looks largely factory standard, save perhaps for the seats, which look to have been retrimmed in a patterned finish that adds a touch of jaunty to the car’s aesthetics.
The history file shows over €4,500 in recent maintenance by classic specialists in France. That has included a recent engine and gearbox service in June 2026. The brakes received new callipers, pads and fluid at the same time.
Perhaps because these cars were so reliable, resulting in them being driven and driven until they eventually die, the 2-door 242 is a rare find these days. This one’s condition, style and recent maintenance make it very appealing.
