1979 Honda CX500

Highlights

  • Comprehensive 3-year rebuild from barn find to touring bike
  • Professional powder coating of frame and wheels
  • Custom paint by specialist motorcycle painter
  • Converted using Cafe Racer Kits components
  • Virtually unused since completion in 2021

The Appeal

The Honda CX500 has earned a cult following, despite having had a bit of a rough time of it with the motoring press when new. It's a fabulous looking bike, with curious styling that evokes the likes of Guzzi, and the unusual fixture of a transverse V-twin engine - the first Honda had stuck between two wheels. These motorcycles have become increasingly sought after for custom builds, with their unusual mechanics and technology-packed nature making for an increasingly popular retro curiosity.

This bike is a labour of love, having been transformed from a neglected barn find import into a smart single-seat touring machine through a meticulous three-year restoration process. The comprehensive rebuild included professional finishing touches and quality components from Cafe Racer Kits, and what a result! A truly unique mount that's ready and waiting for its new rider.

History and Paperwork

  • Registered in 1979
  • Purchased in July 2018 as an imported barn find from USA
  • Originally had many missing parts and was non-operational due to missing/damaged electrical components
  • Underwent total rebuild over 3 years down to the last nut and bolt
  • Converted to a single seat touring bike using many parts from Cafe Racer Kits
  • Completed and ready for road use in September 2021 but pandemic delayed actual use
  • Owner became ill and required serious surgery, putting project on hold
  • Being sold because the bike is too heavy for the owner to handle

The Condition

  • The vendor states that the exterior is unmarked
  • This certainly seems to be the case, judging from the photographs
  • Very little mileage has been undertaken - only 'around the block'
  • As a result, the bike is still as-restored
  • Presents well with many new parts fitted
  • Frame and wheels were blasted and powder coated
  • Tank and guards given high gloss paint by a professional motorcycle painting specialist
  • Brand new tyres fitted

The Mechanics

  • 497cc Transverse V-twin engine
  • 5-speed manual transmission
  • Re-jetted carburettors to accommodate new air cleaners
  • Front end completely renewed with forks, brakes and wheel from 1981 bikes sourced on eBay
  • All engine seals and gaskets replaced
  • The vendor reports that the engine starts easily and runs smoothly
