The Appeal
The R107 Mercedes-Benz SL is considered by many to represent 'peak Mercedes-Benz', featuring restrained yet elegant styling and boasting the kind of build quality the brand built its reputation on. Powered by smooth and lusty straight-six and V8 engines, the third generation of SL stayed in production from 1971 to 1989 – a testament to its enduring popularity and appeal.
This 1980 example is a 350 SL, powered by the smooth and torque-rich 3.5-liter V8, coupled to an automatic transmission for smooth progress. The seller has owned it for six years and states that during this time it has only been driven in dry weather and kept in dry storage. The car has not been used recently due to ill health, but has been started and warmed on a regular basis.
Outside, the red bodywork presents well, with bright chromework. Fog lights, the later-style 'eight-hole' alloy wheels and silver-on-black number plates have been fitted. The car has a new soft top, provided by The SL Shop, and comes with its original factory-supplied hard top. The interior features the original cream leather upholstery and wooden dashboard trim.
The seller states that "the colour and shape of the car, and the sound of its V8, really stand out amongst modern-day cars"; they also note that the car "received an award for 'second-best in show' at one of the first shows it went to".
This is a well-cared-for example of one of Mercedes-Benz's most enduring models, ready to be enjoyed anywhere.
