The Appeal

‘Invincible’ is a common word applied to Mercedes’ original ‘Geländewagen’ and with good reason. Typically engineered without much concern about the cost, it’s a testament to their endurance that modern versions still stick rigidly to the original design template.

For all those reasons, W460s that come to market tend to have covered high mileages and have worked hard. Not this one. It has covered a mere 56,000 miles in its 44 years, which is barely run in for the 156bhp M110 2.7L straight six motor. That well-regarded unit is allied to a 4spd 4G-TRONIC automatic, making this SWB example ideal for longer journeys.

We are told that it remained with its first keeper for 30 years and that, like the current keeper, he always garaged it indoors. At some point it gained an AMG body kit and badging, with wheels similar to the factory design, so neatly blends the G-Wagon’s old and new periods. The vendor acquired it in the UK in 2020 and has since registered it in Ireland. Recent work has included refurbishing the 15in alloys, fitting new snow tyres and a pair of LED headlights. There is also a re-cored radiator and the front seat squabs have been renovated.

Mechanically, the vendor reports it starts and runs well, with all three differential lockers functioning correctly and a re-cored radiator maintaining proper temperature. The vendor notes some small rust blisters on the bodywork and a small crack on the rear bumper, so it may need some cosmetic attention; overall, this G Wagon appears mechanically sound.
